A very decorative and unusual Arts & Crafts antique oak pedestal. The moulded square top is set above four carved panelled sides raised on a moulded plinth base. Each panel has a medieval figure carved in high relief representing the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Provenance: Originally from Ravensby Hall in Carnoustie, Angus, Scotland.
    Circa 1900.

Notes: Ravensby Hall, with its turrets, bays, and gables built in the 1870s for The Thomson family of Dundee, is an elegant country house incorporating both Gothic and Scottish Baronial styles. The Thomson family had acquired their wealth through the 19th century, initially in shipping, and then later by expanding into publishing, buying the Dundee Courier in 1886. Ravensby Hall was intended as their country retreat, befitting a family of their status in Scottish society.

A fine Louis XVI style antique fireplace mantel in rare beautifully gold veined Portoro Marble. The moulded rectangular shelf is set above a simple panelled frieze which is flanked by a pair of square endblocks supported on moulded and fluted corbels above panelled jambs raised on simple footblocks.
    French, late 19th century.

Notes: Varieties of Portoro Marble have been found in different parts of the world but the marble used to make this chimneypiece is of the highest quality and could only have come from the quarries on the Island of Palmaria, in the Gulf of La Spezia, Italy. This marble was discovered and first extracted in Roman times and is rightly regarded worldwide as a luxury marble because of it's quality and the distinctive black and gold veining.

A large and fine antique Palladian style chimneypiece in the manner of William Kent (1685-1748). Carved in pure white Statuary Marble and with Breche Violette, endblocks and ingrounds, it has a prominent corniced shelf set over a beautifully scrolled foliate carved frieze, centred by a simple Breche Violette plaque, flanked by foliate endblocks above bold tapering volute jambs, topped by ribbon tied scrolls, resting on plain large footblocks.
English, mid 19th century with later restoration.

Notes: This chimneypiece, made in the 19th Century, bears a striking resemblance to the chimneypiece in the Red Dining Room at Raynham Hall in Norfolk, designed by Inigo Jones in the late 17th Century. The chimneypiece was probably designed by William Kent as the Hall was refashioned by him in 1731 in collaboration with the Master Sculptor & Carver James Richards (1718-1759) who is credited with the carving of the chimneypiece.

A large and rare, highly ornate antique oak overmantel reminiscent of the style of the French designer Daniel Marot(1661–1752). The top with egg and dart moulding, carved acanthus scrolls and pendant drops above a quatrefoil opening framed by acanthus carved bolection moulding reserved on a diaper ground and flanked by scroll supports with heavy acanthus carving above a base section with a scrolling cartouche and carved strapwork and draperies. Photos before restoration and in it's original state with some carved elements missing.
    English mid 19th century.
Provenance: By repute originally removed from Alnwick Castle in the late 20th century and erected as an overmantel in a house in Alnwick.

Notes: In the second half of the 18th century Robert Adam carried out many alterations to Alnwick Castle. The interiors were largely in a Strawberry Hill Gothic style and not at all typical of his work, which was usually neoclassical in design. However in the 19th century Algernon, 4th Duke of Northumberland replaced much of the interiors with less ostentatious architecture designed by Anthony Salvin. According to the official website a large amount of Adam's work survives, but little or none of it remains in the principal rooms shown to the public, which were redecorated in an opulent Italianate style in the Victorian era by Luigi Canina.

    THE ITALIAN WARS
A monumental and imposing richly carved French walnut trumeau chimneypiece. The generously moulded cornice lies above a dramatically carved arched central panel dominating the trumeau frieze and depicting a scene of battle probably relating to the eighth Italian War (1551-1559) when Henry II of France declared war against Charles V ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. The panel is flanked on either side by two large carved horned and winged mythical beasts and the whole rests on the wide and sturdy fireplace surround beneath.

The deep shelf of the fireplace surround, with its carved alternating bossed frieze, sits above a pair of robust fluted columns with Corinthian capitals and stepped footblocks and the deep set fireplace opening is topped by a finely carved and decorative border detail.
    French, mid 19th century.

Notes: The 1551-1559 Italian War was also known as the Habsburg – Valois War. There were a series of conflicts from 1494 to 1559 that involved, at various times, most of the city-states of Italy, the Papal States, most of the major states of Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Originally arising from dynastic disputes over the Duchy of Milan and the Kingdom of Naples, the wars rapidly became a general struggle for power and territory among their various participants, and were marked with an increasing number of alliances, counter-alliances and betrayals.

A Coalbrookdale lamp stand modelled as an allegory of Europe, from a series of four cast-iron standards representing the continents. This series was designed by the celebrated British sculptor John Bell in the 1860s.

It was Francis Darby's interest in the possibilities of statue casting that led to the foundry’s partnership with Bell, who allowed the foundry to take a mold from his celebrated statue, The Eagle Slayer. Once they had successfully completed this task, Bell went on to design a number of fine cast items for them, including pieces for the Great Exhibition and the Paris Exposition.

John Bell (1811–1895) was a British sculptor perhaps most famous for his statue, The Eagle Slayer.
