A gilt brass and bronze patinated clock garniture, with original gilt wood and royal blue velvet bases. The gilded case has decorative silvered, gilded and patinated panels. This matches the technique on the garniture, and this decoration is flanked by scrolling handles adorned with gorgons.
The movement by the renowned Parisian clock designer and maker, Louis Achille Brocot, strikes the hours and half hours on a single gong. Louis Achille Brocot was responsible for a great number of design innovations in French clock making during the mid 19th century.
    French, circa 1870.

Louis Achille Brocot was born to a renowned clockmaking family in 1817. He went on to become an awarding winning clockmaker and mathematician. He invented the Brocot suspension which allowed the length of the pendulum to be altered, adjusting the time by turning a key on the dial. He died in 1878.

A pair of fine Arita ware jars and covers, finely hand-painted with organic floral decoration.
    Japanese, c.1880.

Notes: It is said that a Korean ceramist travelled to Japan and discovered a seam of porcelain stone in the province of Arita the early 17th century. Following this discovery, the manufacture of ceramics proliferated in Arita, and much was exported by the Dutch East India company to Europe, where was revered for its quality.

A pair of Aesthetic Movement andirons attributed to Thomas Jekyll and possibly made by Barnard, Bishop and Barnards. Although unmarked, they possess the qualities of Jekyll's designs, with his signature use of Japanese mons within the decoration on the shafts. The rosettes symbolise night and day and with beautiful repoussé work a Kingfisher on a branch represents Day, or dawn, with the sun rising behind him, whilst the owl represents Night and is surrounded by stars.
    English, c.1875.

Notes: Barnard, Bishop and Barnards were at the heart of Norwich's iron industry, and the company gained an international reputation after their collaboration with Thomas Jekyll.
Jeckyll’s associations with a group of London artists – notably James Abbott McNeill Whistler – made him a key figure in the Anglo-Japanese Aesthetic Movement. Jeckyll used japonaise designs for Barnards’ fireplaces while his sunflower motif came to symbolise the Aesthetic Movement.

An ornate parcel gilt bronze colza chandelier and a pair of matching wall lights. The set is playful in style, with a tied ribbon at the very top of the chandelier, from which the central stem hangs. This is mounted with three bronze frolicking putti. The chandelier has three branches, from which emanate three stems, there are 9 bulbs in total.
The accompanying wall lights also feature putti sitting between the two branches hung from tied ribbons.

    English, early 20th century.

The colza lamp was developed by the Swiss physicist Ami Argand around 1770 but was patented in England through Argand’s business partner, Matthew Boulton. The patent lapsed due to an oversight on Boulton's part and so the technology became freely available and was widely adopted by British makers. This kind of gravity fed lamp, running on thick viscose colza oil (which can be distinguished from other modes of lamp by its raised central reservoir), remained popular in Britain until being superseded by more efficient paraffin oil lamps and gas lighting in the mid-19th century.
