A substantial Regency fireplace surround in beautifully coloured and veined Ashburton Marble from the Lindhay Quarry in South Devon. The moulded shelf, set above a cushioned panel frieze, rests on a pair of tall half round tapering columns fronting the jambs. English, early 19th century.
Shown here with firegrate SNo14748 not included.

Notes: In 1852 The Western Times, a Devon newspaper, reported that some large blocks of marble had been excavated from quarries adjoining the ancient Stannary Town of Ashburton. It was suggested at the time that the marble be used for the making of chimneypieces as the veins and colour were considered very decorative and superior to that found in any other quarry in South Devon. The Linhay Quarry was still being mined into the late 20th century. King Edward I's Stannary Charter of 1305 had established Tavistock, Ashburton and Chagford as Devon's Stannary Towns, they were where locally mined refined tin was assessed, coined, and sold.

A tall 18th century finely carved wood and polychrome figure of the Bohemian saint St. John Nepomuk(1345-1393). He was purportedly the confessor to the Queen of Bohemia and at the request of King Wenceslaus(1361-1419), King of the Romans and Bohemia, was drowned in the Vltava River in Prague for refusing to divulge the secrets of the confessional. Nepomuk is also believed to be the protector against floods and troubled waters and is considered a patron saint of bridges.

  • Stock: 14264

A highly ornate and heavy, brass Regency fireplace fender with alternating cut acanthus leaf and palmette detail held between polished brass bands raised on three neat acanthus decorated feet. English, early 19th century.

Provenance: By repute the Earls of Warwick. There was an identical fender in the Red Drawing Room of the historic Medieval Warwick Castle before extensive renovation work was carried out in 2002. It is highly probable that it is one and the same fireplace fender. The third image shows it in the fireplace behind a fire screen in the early part of the 20th century.

Notes: Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, England, with its turbulent history, dates back to the 13th century when it was the home of the de Beauchamp family. It came under the stewardship of the Earls of Warwick and later the Greville family in the early part of the 17th century and remained as their private home until 1978. The property was then taken over by The Tussauds Group, which later became Merlin Entertainments Group in 2007 and remains under their guardianship today.
