A very striking and large brass and cast iron enclosed fire basket in the Renaissance manner with an ornate repousse decorated hood with integral flue connection. The grate supported by a pair of monopodic panthers holding rings in their mouths. Registered design number 256679 for 1895.

English, late 19th century.

This type of inclosed fire basket with integral flue connection is ideal for use with fire surrounds with large openings and or small chimney flues, as the basket is connected directly to the flue in the same way as a stove.

A very tall cast-iron solid fuel burning stove crowned with stylised leaves and spear mounts above strapwork bands and acroterion style motifs on the chimney. The makers mark Baerums Verk, No.158 can be clearly seen on the front plate. In good working condition.
Norwegian late 19th century.

Notes: During the early 17th century iron ore was found in the areas now known as Kirkerud and Eineåsen in Bærum in Norway. The then King of Denmark and Norway, Christian IV, wanted his kingdom to be selfsufficient in iron production and in 1610 he granted a Paul Smelter the right to build, at his own expense, a foundry in the area. During it’s heyday, the ironworks known as Baerums Verk, produced everything from cannon balls, cannons, armoured plates, nails, iron parts, and bullets. Later such items as stoves, ovens, grave ornamentations, kitchen utensils, hardware and machine parts gradually became the mainstays of production.

A massive, ornately detailed cast iron fire grate in the Gothic Revival manner. The arched backplate centred with a quatrefoil, the two barred grate is fronted by a pair of tall standards with quartered roundels set beneath stylised fleur de lys spire finials with smaller versions echoed on the grate.

A plaster bust of Zachariah probably cast in the late 19th century from the original monumental 'Well of Moses' sculpture by the Dutch artisan Claus Sluter ( 1395 - 1405 ) for the Carthusian monastery of Chartreuse de Champmol built as a burial site by the Burgundian Duke Philip the Bold just outside the Burgundian capital of Dijon, now in France. A rare and very fine James I oak overmantel. This Jacobean piece has a reeded frieze, leaf carved to the centre and corners, over three arched arcaded panels. Each panel framed between four alternating carved figural caryatids and set with inlaid stylised tulips beautifully excuted in bog oak and fruitwood.

A RARE DELFTWARE FIREPLACE INSERT & HEARTH attributed to the Dutch tile maker J van Hulst and made in Harlingen, Friesland in the 19th century. The polychrome tiles depict river and coastal scenes and are decorated with pigments made from metal oxides; cobalt for the blue, manganese for the purple or black and copper for the green.
Dutch, late19th century.

Notes: The term Delftware is derived from the Dutch town of Delft where from the seventeenth century many potteries produced hand-painted tin-glazed pottery of high quality which was exported all over the world and as they were mainly applied to walls and fireplaces, they belong to the history of architectural ceramics. The fired pottery tiles would have been covered with an opaque white tin glaze and would then have been decorated as in this case with river & coastal scenes. The end of the many centuries the old Harlingen tradition was signalled when the Van Hulst family closed their factory in 1933.

'GATHER YE THE ROSEBUDS'
A 20th century Art Nouveau style stained glass tryptich of maidens in a woodland setting. The enamelled logo at the back of one of the panels states ' Glashaus 88 ', they were a Glasgow company of stained glass makers and restorers who were commissioned to make the panels in 1988 for The Princes Casino in Glasgow.
With restorations. Signed & dated 1988.

The figures in the central panel are very similar to those depicted in a window designed in 1902 by Ernest Archibald Taylor (1874 -1951), who trained at the Glasgow School of Art, for the industrialist William Weir entitled 'Gather Ye the Rosebuds'. His panel is illustrated in the book Scotland's Stained Glass by Michael Donnelly, image below.The title is probably a reference to the poem by Robert Herrick (1591 - 1674)

'Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles today
To-morrow will be dying.'

It points to springtime with a warning and awareness of the swift passage of time and with it the inevitable loss of youth and beauty.
