An interesting Roman themed cast iron fire side fender with integral tool rests. The serpentine curb bar has a central beaded roundel featuring the head of Caesar in profile flanked by trailing floral and acanthus foliate mounts. It is accompanied by a pair of unusual tool rests in the form of Roman Gods. One of Venus holding a conch and a mirror, the other of Mars holding a war club. Each is rising from ornate acanthus mounts before the scrolling tool rest bars.
English, with the diamond registration mark for 1856.

Brass fireplace fenders were very popular in the Victorian era and were often pierced and finely engraved with floral motifs. In the Georgian era, steel fenders were popular and neoclassical in style. Unlike the Victorian fireplace fenders they were simpler and more delicate in design.
