An elegant oval gilt wall mirror, surmounted by a scrolling cartouche and a cascade of flowers. The egg and dart frame meets the original bevelled glass with a dainty beaded edge. The gilding has been rubbed back to give it a subtle glow.

A grand French Louis XVI gilded overmantel mirror with a cartouche forming the crest, from which emanate sprigs of loosely ribboned laurel. The rest of the frame is decorated with a tightly bound laurel design, very much in the French tradition. The gilding has been deliberately distressed to partially reveal the warm red ground.

A good example of an early twentieth century time recorder clock in an oak case, serial number 51947. The glass door panel bears the words, "National Time Recorder Co. (Patentees) Blackfriars London. S.E.". The clock face with Roman numerals is set within a wood frame and bears the name "National Time Recorder Co. Ltd. Aquinas St, Stamford St. London EC1". beneath which is a small metal plaque stating "Local service, The National Time Recorder Co Ltd. Phone: Central 3655 . This Time Recorder is in full working order.

Notes: Time Recorders like this one would have been used to record the times workers came in and out of their place of work. The National Time Recorder Co. Ltd (incorporated in 1917, company number 146424, though possibly founded around 10 years earlier in 1907) was one of the two largest UK manufacturers of time recorders. The head office and factory was originally based in Blackfriars London, and moved to the Lagoon Works in St Mary Cray (Orpington) Kent in 1951, on the site of the Blue Lagoon swimming pool which had been damaged during the war. Other branches were established in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sheffield. [Source: World Clocks]

A magnificent 19th century Oxblood or "Sang de Boeuf" jardiniere on stand, with a lobed planter supported by a base mounted with three griffin monopodia with paw feet.

Attributed to Pierre Clément Massier. French, c.1880.

Notes: Clément Massier was born into a family of ceramicists and took an interest in the business from an early age. His factory-gallery complex in Golfe Juan became a destination for the elite who summered in Monaco, Nice, and Cannes. He was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 and subsequently became an of official supplier to the British crown.

Sang de boeuf glaze first appeared in Chinese porcelain at the beginning of the 18th century. In Europe, many companies tried to replicate the glaze, and it particularly took off in France.

A rare pine and composition chimneypiece by Richard Foster of Edinburgh. The chimneypiece is a celebration of the Scottish coast, and painstaking care has been taken to render the sea life and flora with a great deal of accuracy. The composition decoration has also been carefully wood-grained to make it appear like carved pine; this finish is a great survival.
The inverted breakfront shelf sits above a band of composition moulded into acorns and mushrooms, and the frieze is decorated with swags of ribboned bellflowers in the neoclassical taste. Between these swags is the unusual detail of a fan of seaweed at their centre, a request of the patron no doubt.
The central tablet has a floral ribboned swag studded with roses and other small blooms and the centre is filled with a spray of flowers and ferns within a woven basket. The endblocks feature a bound posy of roses and the jambs are decorated with trailing oak leaves and acorns. A very fine thing.

Notes:
Richard Foster was born in Canonbie, the Scottish Borders, in 1755. At the age of fourteen, he was recorded as having a bank account in London, presumably as he was serving as an apprentice there, perhaps to the Adam Brothers as they too were in London at this time. In 1785 he returned to Edinburgh, working as a "joiner" and married to the daughter of a wealthy leather merchant. His chimneypieces were sold not only in Scotland, but in the USA, a bold move only a few years after American Independence was declared! This is perhaps why he avoided becoming a prominent figure in Scottish social and intellectual circles, as selling to Britain's former colonies would have been regarded as treachery in many cases. The pine and composition chimneypiece he perfected made the rational principles and beauty of classicism affordable to the growing mercantile and professional class emerging in the 18th century. These clients wished to express their cultural understanding through objects that conveyed the principles they admired, the chimneypiece was one such highly prized object. The Adam brothers (Robert and James) were well known for promoting their designs to the masses, and it is the pine and composition chimneypiece they made for the emerging middle class in Edinburgh that have become synonymous with the "Adam Style". However, Foster was a true master of the technique, and his designs are some of the most delicate and finely manufactured ever made.

A very elegant Regency pine and gesso chimneypiece decorated in the Adam style. The inverted breakfront shelf is decorated with a beaded cornice and sits above an elegant frieze decorated with opposing gryphons holding ribbons of bellflowers in their beaks, centred by urns on stands. The tablet is more naturalistic, with Venus and attendants depicted in a pastoral landscape. The slender endblocks are decorated with classical urns on stands, and rest above the gently fluted pilaster jambs.

A French gilt gesso wall mirror in the Louis XVI style, the crest centred by an oval cartouche which is bordered by a ribbon tied floral cascade and framed by two urn finials brimming with flowers. The gilt frame also features garlanded trophies and to the bottom, a lyre, a violin and sheet music. Original beveled mirror plates.

A superb Victorian walnut and solid ebony Gothic library table. This outstanding table is made especially rare by having solid ebony legs, stretcher and finials. The beautifully carved Solomonic legs and stretcher support a fine burr walnut top.

This table is incredibly diverse, and can be used as a centre table, or even a desk.

A set of four Victorian cast iron garden chairs, with spoon backs featuring crisply cast decoration above circular seats cast with a radiating circular pattern and resting on elaborate cabriole shaped legs. This is not an identical set, as is formed form 2 very similar pairs. Very much in the Coalbrookdale style, and would work well as a patio set as they are very heavy.

An ornate Renaissance Revival French Mirror with an imposing upper crest featuring a male mask, whilst the lower cartouche features the fearsome mask of a lion. The rest of the gilt and gesso frame is similarly opulent. The central bevelled mirror is also bordered by four champagne hued pieces of handmade mirrored glass.

A set of four framed 18th century copper-engravings of exotic birds with original hand colour. This set comprises three engravings from George Edwards', Gleanings of Natural History Containing Figures of Quadrupeds, Birds, Insects, Plants, published by G. Sidney for George Edwards, London, 1758-1764. One engraving from Francois Nicholas Martinet's engraving from the Comte de Buffon's superb work, the Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris from 1770 to 1786. These are two of the most important ornithological publications of the 18th century, Darwin being a great admirer of both.

A pair of 18th century Dutch Delft Faience blue and white vases of octagonal baluster form the covers with scrolling foliate finials. They are very finely painted in cobalt blue. The front panels decorated with peonies and willow trees within scrollwork cartouches the back panels with leaf sprigs on a white background. There are makers mark and initials to the base of each vase. Dutch, circa 1764-70.

A simple and elegant bolection fireplace carved from a dove grey limestone. The polished and undulating surface reveals the subtle veining and mottling, which would be just as well suited to a contemporary interior as a period one. English, c.1930.

Provenance: Removed from a property on Eaton Square, London.

The Queen Anne style of the late 17th century saw the emergence of the simple bolection fireplace, often situated within a panelled room. It was far more simple in design that what had preceded it, and it was this striking simplicity that secured its enduring popularity.

A fine oak longcase clock by Philip Avenell of Farnham with later lacquered chinoiserie decoration. The eight day movement strikes the hours on a clear bell. The clock face has a 12 inch brass break arched brass dial flanked by ornate gilt brass spandrels. The raised silvered chapter ring is crisply engraved with black Roman numerals and Arabic five minute numerals to the outer aspect. The central dial has a subsidiary seconds dial, a date aperture and is profusely engraved with floral decoration. The maker's signature is signed within a cartouche. The chinoiserie decoration was likely added in the early twentieth-century. English, c.1780

Notes: Philip Avenell was part of a 200 year dynasty of clockmakers based in the South of England. Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes records Phillip Avenell as working in London circa 1765 then in Farnham from circa 1775, roughly when this clock was made. Philip Avenell died in 1809.

The semi-nomadic Ashfar tribe originated in North-West Iran, but are now located in the South-East of the country.

An elegant Louis XVI style 19th century fireplace, crisply carved from Carrara marble, with a finely carved central foliate paterae flanked by the split panelled frieze. The paterae endblocks are of the same acanthus form, and are supported by flat, stop fluted jambs, which in turn rest on plain footblocks. French, late 19th century.

A rare and monumental cast iron Coalbrookdale antique fire grate identical to fire grate SNo 14374. The elaborately scrolled backplate featues a Bagot Goat jumping a fence. The substantial basket, with a strapwork apron centred by a lion mask, is supported by a pair of large and powerful panther head standards.

Provenance: The registration mark 65 The Coalbrookdale Company registered September 6th 1841 number 814 can clearly be seen on the back.
English, early to mid 19th century.

Notes: The Bagot goat is believed to be Britain's oldest breed of goat and has lived semi-wild at Blithfield Hall in Staffordshire for over six hundred years.The Coalbrookdale Company, a foundry in Shropshire established in 1709, is probably most famous for building the world's first cast iron bridge erected and opened at Ironbridge in 1780, but it was also noted for its decorative ironwork an example of which is a set of gates opening into London's Hyde Park. The blast furnaces were closed down around 1820 but the foundries remained in use.

Please note that the back plate was once broken the damage can be seen under the goat. It has been strapped on the back, so the grate is still functional.

An imposingly large Jacobean Revival cedar wood antique fireplace surround with an exquisitely inlaid over mantel. This chimneypiece has a projecting pediment on the upper register which rests above a pair of strapwork panels beneath which are two high arched panels decorated with stylised ornate inlaid vases of flowers picked out in satinwood, mahogany, sycamore and ebony. The panels are set between three pairs of free standing, reeded columns with finely carved capitals terminating in tall strapwork feet. Beneath the over mantel is a fireplace surround, with a moulded shelf above a strapwok carved barrel undershelf, supported by a pair of tapering reeded jambs resting on tall footblocks.

A Thomas Elsley, polished steel and cast iron Georgian style fie basket. The arched fireback centred by an urn draped with bellflowers above a four barred curved grate, with etched shoulders, is framed by beading and surmounted by a pair of lidded urn finials above a pierced and etched apron. The twin tapering standards are etched and beaded and surmounted by a larger pair of lidded urn finials.
English, late 19th century.
