A set of three Baroque style two branch ormolu wall lights. The backplates are centred by bearded, grotesque masks, each wearing acanthus leaf crowns, from which emanate twin scrolling arms supporting urn candle holders.

A very large Bidjar carpet centred by a double lozenge design filled with the traditional small floral motifs in deep reds and blues. The name is taken from Bidjar, or Bijar, a small Kurdish town in north western Iran where the carpets are made many in the surrounding villages. As the weavers tie each knot they add an extra weft and use their heavy metal and wood combs to beat the weft and the knots down which makes the carpets strong and very durable and this stiff, heavy foundation creates carpets that can withstand many years of heavy use. Because of this they are known as “the iron rugs of Persia”.

A pair of William IV style mahogany armchairs. The deep-buttoned backs and stuffover seats upholstered in cherry red cowhide. The crinoline stretcher base connects the front turned legs to the splayed back legs all raised on brass castors. English, late 19th century.

A large low relief antique carved Italian circular marble wall plaque of a young Florentine noble in the Renaissance manner. Italian, 18th century.

The last image shows a similar plaque of Ludovico il Moro Sfarzo, the 7th Duke of Milan (1451 - 1508) displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

A mid twentieth century Isfahan carpet dominated by the central foliate medallion of intricate design surrounded by vines and flowers. These carpets are identified by the use of soft kork wool and silk woven in a very tight pile in red, magenta, blue or indigo on an ivory background.

The city of Isfahan is one of the finest in the Islamic world known for its wonderful Persian architecture. The carpets, woven here for centuries, are perhaps the best and most valuable to be found and are often inspired by the designs found in the buildings, gardens and palaces in this beautiful city. A large Heriz carpet with bold geometric design from the Heris region in east Azerbaijan in northwest Persia now Iran. The villagers of the region continue to weave carpets following traditional patterns often from memory the design having been handed down from generation to generation and usually featuring a geometric pattern with large central medallions. They are both durable and hard wearing and it is said that they incorporate woven images relating to old folk tales.

An early 20th century large lead garden figure of a Naiad, a water nymph, seated on a rocky outcrop. Naiads in Greek mythology were water spirits or nymphs who were said to preside over fresh water fountains, wells, springs, streams and brooks. English, circa 1910.

A front section of a 19th century Lit Clos possibly of the Beren region in France, typically inlaid with ebonised and boxwood lozenge and compass motifs, set with brass studs and spindle turned roundels and an arched niche and small podium to the centre.
French, 19th century.

A Lit Clos, or Box Bed, is a traditional piece of furniture usually found in homes with only one room. It would be ,like sleeping in a cupboard but it did allow some privacy and was warm in winter.

A set of three tall, polished cast iron Victorian fire tools comprising a poker, a shaped and pierced shovel and a pair of tongs. Each with barley twist stems and elegant handles embellished with foliate detail and topped with acorn finials. English, mid 19th century.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH PAINTING: An Aesthetic Movement Register Grate and Walnut Fire Surround. The fire surround has a breakfront shelf above a frieze with alternating rosette panelled designs, curiously the left set differs from those on the right, the frieze is centred by the initials EC and the date 1875, and the opening is set with Ashburton marble slips.

The Integral Register Grate has ten hand painted tiles, four of which depict 17th century Dutch Painters, all of whom were of the Dutch Realist School of Genre Painting in Utrecht, Delft and Leiden or Amsterdam.

The painters are from the bottom left:
WOUTER CRABET(H) (1594 – 1644) The School of Delft and the most important Dutch Golden Age artist in the town of Gouda.
LEONARD BRAMER (1596 – 1667) The School of Delft an established painter of note who had studied in Italy & who later became a pupil of Rembrandt.
REMBRANDT Harmensz van Rijn (1606 – 1669) whose artistic ability could not be contained within the confines of Dutch Realism. A grand manner artist in his depictions of the drama of the Bible and an acute portraitist, including many famous portraits of himself, capturing the complete range of human emotions.
GERARD DOU (1613 – 1675) a pupil of Rembrandt & founder of the Painters Guild of Leiden another Dutch Golden Age painter he specialised in genre scenes & was noted for his trompe l’oeil and candlelit night-scenes.
English Dated 1875.

NOTE- The walnut surround was probably manufactured by Gillows of Lancaster as they manufactured the original furnishings for the property in Windemere from which this fireplace was removed.

A very rare pair of 17th century Charles II enameled brass andirons or fire dogs.

The uppermost decoration depicts the royal arms, which is supported by two nude male figures, between which is a vase of flowers. The andirons terminate in two disks also decorated with flowers, possibly tulips and roses.

Attributed to the workshops of Anthony Hatch and Stephen Pilcherd. Hatch was a well-known member of the Armourers and Braziers Company and worked with Pilcherd on the low-volume production of enamel ware, which would have been very expensive at the time.

Firedogs of cast brass decorated with red, blue and white enamel, with wrought iron supports, bearing the arms of Charles II or James II. The brass front is in 4 parts, the uppermost containing the royal arms, the middle part formed of two nude male figures supporting the arms with a vase of flowers between them, the lower portions in the form of two convex disks decorated with tulips and other flowers. Unlike cloisonné decoration, the enameled fields were cast in the mould.

London, c. 1660-1688.
