A William IV walnut and rosewood pedestal teapoy of exceptional quality. The gadrooned walnut top is beaded with rosewood and is mounted on a solid rosewood acanthus column, which stands on a beautifully carved quatreform lion paw foot base. The interior features a red velvet interior with a tooled leather lid. Interestingly, this interior was likely fitted around 20 years after this teapoy was made. This is probably due to the fact that the cost of tea dropped considerably in the mid-19th century.
    English, c.1830.

Notes: The potential for tea drinking had increased enormously in the first half of the 19th century, Britain's population had doubled within 50 years and people were wealthier, mostly due to the jobs created as a result of the industrial revolution, and the rapidly expanding trade between other countries. In 1833 the British government removed the East India's monopoly to import tea. Importantly, this opened up the possibility of importing tea from India, which they did in 1839. This lowered the cost of tea, and with it, the necessity to keep it under lock and key in such high status objects. High quality teapoys such as this, were then repurposed as work boxes, or for more general storage.

A pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) sancai-glazed ridge tiles modelled as horse and rider. Both tiles are glazed in rich green and amber, the horses in a rich amber and the riders wearing green robes.

Tiles of this kind were often used on public and private buildings to ward off evil spirits. The work of glazed tiles is known in China as Liuli Wa, literally `roof-tile of glass`, a term dating back to the Tang Dynasty. According to traditional Chinese beliefs, roofs are a platform of communication between the world of the living and the realm of the spirits.
    Chinese, late 15th - early 16th century.

Sancai means three glazes, the basic colours of this glaze are green, cream and amber, but more colours were sometimes used. It was a lead glaze and the addition of metal oxides created the limited palate of green and amber and sometimes blue. In the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 AD), grave goods were often glazed in this manner and there was a resurgence in popularity for this glaze in the Ming period.

A fine 19th century bust of Bacchus, or Dionysus. This bronze library bust is modelled on the Landsdowne Antinous - who has assumed the guise of Dionysus - and is mounted on a gilt socle and a bronze banded base cast in low relief with a classical procession.
    Italian, c.1890.

Notes: Antinous, the lover and companion of Emperor Hadrian, had one of the most recognisable faces in the Roman Empire. After his sudden death 130 AD, the grief stricken Emperor declared the youth had been reborn as a God. Representations of Antinous assuming the form of a God flooded the visual culture of the Roman Empire, and the Lansdowne Antinous was a larger than life bust which became renowned for its idealised beauty and quality. Antinous' image was commonly asssimilated with the well-known Gods such as Apollo, Mercury and indeed Bacchus. This bust was excavated at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli, and was likely part of a shrine dedicated to the youth.

A very large and fine nineteenth-century rosewood and tortoiseshell bracket clock. The beautifully figured rosewood case is bordered with ebonised mouldings, inlaid with tortoiseshell and banded with boxwood. The arched pediment is surmounted by three gilded pineapple finials,

The clock has an extremely good, eight day triple fuseé four pillar movement with anchor escapement, it chimes the quarters either, "Whittington" on eight bells or "Westminster chimes" on four gongs and it strikes the hours on a single large gong. The movement is in beautiful original condition retaining its original brushed brass finish with all steel parts bright polished, while the five gongs are blued steel, all of which is visible through the large side and rear windows of the case. The movement is intended to be viewed through these windows and the quality reflects this intention.

The arched face has an engraved silvered brass chapter ring with matte gilt centre and Roman numerals, it also has a subsidiary dial above for selecting either Westminster or Whittington chimes. Under this there is a small level to silence the chimes. This dial is set amongst gilt brass foliate spandrels within the arch of the door and spandrels centred by female masks to the bottom.
There is a second smaller subsidiary dial above the clock face to adjust for fast/slow running, which is only visible when the main door is open.
