A patinated bronze model of a rhyton, after the Antique, the terminal in the form of a bull's head, with a looping handle, on a circular socle.

English, c.1800. Notes: In the 2nd century BCE, the Minoans developed a ceremonial drinking vessel called a rhyton, developed from the Greek word rheo, 'to flow'. These vessels are characterised by their double opening; when liquid is poured into the top it flowed through a smaller opening. In antiquity, this was used for aerating wine, or pouring liquid into a shallow bowl to offer as a libation to the Gods.

A exceptionally rare complete set of Minton tiles for a fireplace. This set of fifteen transferware tiles are all stamped Minton on the verso, and form a complete set of fireplace interior tiles. The top tiles depict putti assuming the guises of different disciplines: the apothecary, the musician, the stone mason, the geographer and the astronomer. The side tiles depict large putti playing instruments surrounded by arabesque foliate decoration.

A pair of late Meiji period hand painted Japanese Imari porcelain vases and covers of lobed inverted baluster form. The bodies decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, with panels containing birds and naturalistic flowers, on a foliate and stylised chrysanthemum ground.

A rare 17th century Japanese blue and white vase dating to the early Edo Period (1603-1868). This vase is surviving evidence of the collaborative nature of porcelain decoration between Japan and the Netherlands in this period. The Dutch East India Company was known to occasionally export unfinished porcelain to be finished in the Netherlands in the 'oriental style'.
A piece of export ware, this vase was decorated in Japan in blue and white, with the intention of further Imari style decoration in enamels being added once it arrived in the Netherlands. It is extraordinarily rare to find partially decorated pieces such as these. Perhaps the firing cracks present made it impossible to re-fire with the enamels, and so remained undecorated. Examples of this practice can be found in the Metropolitan Museum and the British Museum.

Notes: During the early Edo period, the Dutch and Chinese were the only nations able to trade with Japan, as their shogun had imposed a policy of strict isolation. A small number of Dutch merchants were permitted to reside on an island outside Nagasaki, close to the Arita porcelain kilns and Imari port. The Dutch exposed the Japanese ceramicists to Chinese blue underglaze porcelain, and this technique was absorbed into the Japanese oeuvre and its influence can be seen in this vase.

A pair of 'a berettino' ground Venetian maiolica albarelli of dumbbell shape, painted with dark blue flowers, oak leaves, berries and other foliage against a paler blue ground, the waisted middles painted with scrolls inscribed 'V DA CANTVS ne', which roughly translates to ''give me a song and perhaps alludes to this jar once containing a tincture for the throat and EL ELESCOF', which is a term found in medical texts, thought to mean a topical salve.

Italy, Venice, mid-17th century.

Notes: 'A berettino' albarelli were characterised by their distinctive lavender-blue or pale blue tin glaze, often decorated with dark blue, white, or ochre floral, leafy, or armorial motifs. Primarily produced in Venice, Faenza, or Rome, these waisted apothecary jars often feature Latin inscriptions and were used for storing medicine.

A sixteenth century seated bronze Buddha with traces of the original gilding. Over the centuries, this devotional figure has acquired the most magnificent patina. The figure conforms to the Chien Seng style, which emerged from China in the 3rd century. This saw the Buddhist iconography shift from Indian models to encompass the Chinese decorative style and also Daoist and Confuscion ideals. Seated in virasana with his right hand in bhumisparshamudra and wearing the Buddhist monastic robes known as samghati, his face has been modelled with a serene expression.

A pair of English stained, painted and leaded glass windows. Very much taking their cue from the Pre-Raphaelite movement, the design for these windows harks back to the medieval period, in both the composition and the dress of the subjects. The twin scene depicts the seasons, spring and autumn, with a woman admiring the blossom on a tree, whilst the man gathers wheat with a scythe.

English, mid-19th century.

At present, these are framed for display but could easily be fitted as a window.

A very beautiful 18th century Dutch delft five piece garniture, comprising three baluster lidded vases with parrot finials and two trumpet vases. Each vase is beautifully hand-painted with pastoral vignettes featuring musicians, and these scenes are surrounded by foliate and floral boarders. On the verso, ythe set is simply decorated with floral sprays. As to be expected from Delft of this period, there are small chips and losses.

A Chinese export, Ming dynasty, blue and white crackle glazed 'dragon jar', painted in underglaze blue, with two sinuous dragons amung stylised clouds, with four loop handles to the shoulder. Unfortunately this jar, a rare survivor, has sustained some damage during it's long life.

A complete set of twelve tiles designed by John Moyr Smith, for Mintons china works, depicting scenes from Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels. Each tile has the book title displayed top left, contained within a shield, the scene and chapter are bottom right with the artist's signature to the left. This set of tiles was first exhibited at the Paris exhibition of 1878.

A fine pair of Irish crystal lidded urns. Taking the form of a Greek krater, the cut glass sweet meat jars or bonbonnières are crisply faceted and the lids surmounted by charming acorn finials. Originally, such urns were designed to hold sweetmeats or similar confections. They are in exceptionally good condition.

A rare and complete Victorian twelve place Minton dinner service, with cobalt blue foliate decoration; hand coloured in orange with gilt edges. The finials to the covers of the tureens are in the form of figs set upon fig leaves, finished in cobalt and gold. Verso each piece has printed and impressed marks for Minton.

This service is complete and consists of, 12 soup bowls 12 large dinner plates, 12 small dinner plates, 12 side plates, 5 serving plates of various sizes, 1 large soup tureen with stand, cover and ladle, 2 vegetable tureens with covers, 1 sauce tureen with stand, cover and ladle and 1 gravy boat and stand.

A pair of bronze Pixiu figures. These mythical creatures emerged from Chinese folklore and are believed to be guardians of good fortune and wealth. They are depicted as creatures with the head of a dragon and the body of a lion.

A magnificent pair of enormous 17th century limestone capitals. Once, these capitals would have graced the grand doorway of stone building, being raised high above eye level and perhaps supporting a grand pediment. Now, they are raised on the original column bases. The capitals loosely conform to the composite order, with acanthus leaves carved at their base and the torsos of four fauns bearing the weight of the abacus, each side centred by the mask of a putto.

Notes: These capitals have at some point been used as the base for a console table, with two flat pieces of newer stone fitted to their tops. We can make a top for these capitals in our workshops if desired.

A pair of large biscuit porcelain plaques after Thorvaldsen's iconic 'Night and Day' reliefs. Thorvaldsen was Denmark's greatest cultural export during the 18th and 19th centuries, despite spending most of his career in Italy. His 'Night and Day' reliefs were first modelled in Rome in 1815 in marble and were very well-received, and high quality copies in porcelain were hugely sought after.
‘Night’ is represented by a winged female, crowned with poppy seed heads and bearing in her arms two children who symbolise Sleep and Death. An owl flies beside them. ‘Day’ is shown scattering flowers and carrying a winged boy with a flaming torch to represent the sun.

These particular copies were made in the 19th century by the Royal Copenhagen factory. The factory was founded in 1775 and produced copies of well regarded sculptures in twice-fired biscuit porcelain.

A rare 19th century wooden armorial cartouche of shield form, beautifully painted with Bristol's Civic Arms, and the motto "Virtute et Industria" or By Virtue and Industry. This motto and the arms were adopted by the city in the 16th century, and represents the city's maritime heritage and industry. This is a wonderfully decorated cartouche, akin to the hatchments found in churches, but likely to have been displayed in an important civic building, such as the city hall.

A fine early 18th century French Aubusson verdure tapestry in beautiful condition. This tapestry is woven with typical green-blue foliage and depicts a woodland glade studded with flowers. This scene is enclosed by the original wide floral border decorated with abundance of flowers and foliage. French, circa 1720.
Lovely colours and generous proportions. This has been lined in linen and is ready to hang.

A fine and very large pair of grogged terracotta rinceaux panels. Originally installed on the facade of a palazzo in Florence, the panels are Renaissance in style, with a spiralling design of scrolling leaves, cornucopia and mythical beasts. The motif is centred by two tritonesses with entwined tails.
Designs such as these can be seen on many of the great Renaissance buildings, and indeed inside them. One particularly fine example was carved for Ascanio Sforza's tomb at Santa Maria del Popolo, in Rome and a cast of this can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This style of low relief carving was popularised after the discovery of the Ara Pacis in Rome in 1568. This great altar was erected in Rome between 14 and 9 B.C.

Grogged terracotta was the Italian answer to Coade, popularised in England in the 18th century and favoured for its weather resistant finish and ability to be modelled with great detail.

A fine 19th century column pedestal in scagliola, very effectively imitating portoro marble. The octagonal top is revolving, and is mounted on the fluted shaft, which in turn sits on the octagonal base.

A fine Georgian wine cooler in mahogany and bounded in brass. The cooler is of coopered cylindrical form, and the lid encloses the original divided interior. There is a drainage spigot in brass and the whole is raised on three reeded legs.

A pair of fine patinated bronze volute kraters after the antique. The theme of both vases is one of offering to the gods, and this is cast in low relief and bordered by palmette motifs. The handles of the kraters terminate in swan's heads as they join the vase.
