A very unusual cast iron Arts & Crafts fire grate dominated by both a dragon and a sunburst. Used here together they could well represent triumph over adversity. English early 19th century

Notes: In European tradition the dragon was typically fire-breathing and tended to symbolize adversity, chaos or evil. The sunburst symbol has been used throughout history by nations, royalty and religions. It is traditionally defined as the sudden appearance of the sun breaking through from behind clouds and so here could well represent success after adversity or light breaking through after darkness.
