A Baroque style Ashburton Marble antique Bolection fireplace surround in the soft pale pinks and greys typical of the finer examples of this marble most likely to have come from the Lindhay Quarry in Devon in south west England.
English, late 19th century.

Notes: In 1852 a Devon newspaper 'The Western Times', reported that some large blocks of marble had been excavated from quarries adjoining the ancient Stannary Town of Ashburton. It was suggested at the time that the marble be used for the making of chimneypieces as the veins and colour were considered very decorative and superior to that found in any other quarry in South Devon. This marble was still being quarried at the Linhay Quarry into the late 20th century.

'The Choice of Heracles'. A carved Statuary Marble chimneypiece tablet or plaque depicting the Greek hero Heracles (Roman Hercules) at the moment in which he was offered to choose an easy peaceful life or a turbulent glorious life by the two allegorical figures Vice and Virtue. He chose the latter.

A pair of tall, curved silver plated copper Victorian fireplace side panels in the Georgian manner. Each with a trio of cherubs surrounded by scrolling foliate detail and supporting a central banner across which is the motto ' Fiat LVI ' ring which roughly translates as ' Let there be light '.

A highly ornate and heavy, brass Regency fireplace fender with alternating cut acanthus leaf and palmette detail held between polished brass bands raised on three neat acanthus decorated feet.

English, early 19th century.

Provenance: By repute the Earls of Warwick. There was an identical fender in the Red Drawing Room of the historic Medieval Warwick Castle before extensive renovation work was carried out in 2002. It is highly probable that it is one and the same fireplace fender. The third image shows it in the fireplace behind a fire screen in the early part of the 20th century.

Notes: Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, England, with its turbulent history, dates back to the 13th century when it was the home of the de Beauchamp family. It came under the stewardship of the Earls of Warwick and later the Greville family in the early part of the 17th century and remained as their private home until 1978. The property was then taken over by The Tussauds Group, which later became Merlin Entertainments Group in 2007 and remains under their guardianship today.

An unusually elaborate Rococo, Louis XV style Belgian black marble antique fireplace surround, with gilded detail throughout. The serpentine moulded shelf rests above a deep panelled frieze which is centred by an elaborate rocaille style cartouche and flanked by deeply carved large foliate endblocks. The jambs with large carved scrolling detail supported on shaped footblocks. Belgian, 18th century.

A tall and substantial Victorian mahogany fireplace surround and overmantel in the Baroque style. The plain frieze beneath a dentilled under-shelf, centred by a cabochon and mythical beast plaque, is flanked by carved endblocks above reeded columns raised on tall footblocks. The overmantel with a moulded shelf above a dentil band and with a strapwork and foliate decorated panel flanked by tapering reeded pilasters beneath alternating lion masks and oval medallion bands. English, late 19th century.

A very large and majestic arched Victorian antique fireplace mantel in lightly veined Carrara Marble. The wide moulded shelf rests above the broad arched fireplace opening, centred by a panelled keystone, is framed by finely carved, bound laurel torus moulding flanked by a pair of carved laurel wreaths on the panelled spandrels. The whole is supported on large shaped footblocks.

A large and heavy gilt bronze Neoclassical style six branch chandelier with acanthus scroll detail throughout. Six ornate chains are suspended from the corona and linked to the arms. An impressive and beautifully carved French Rococo style antique chimneypiece in richly veined and variegated Languedoc Marble. The shaped moulded shelf rests above the deeply carved serpentine frieze centred by an asymmetrical shell cartouche amid foliate and floral detail. The c-scrolled endblocks sit above scrolled angled jambs which terminate in foliate furls supported on neat footblocks.

A large and sturdy cast iron portable Victorian antique kitchen range. The oven, with its two strong hinges and a slot closing latch, is to the left of the fire grate. The name of the maker Cakebread Robey & Co London and the patented name " Belle Portable " can be clearly seen on the chimney flue. English, late 19th century.

A tall and unique Gothic Revival oak fireplace mantel together with the original Kilkenny Black Marble fender. The high stepped shelf has a central podium flanked by two demi lune podiums under carved with foliate detail, beneath which is a castellated border centred by a keystone with a plain shield. The deeply carved foliate spandrels frame the arched opening with its English Marble ingrounds. The tall oak jambs, with small ebonised columns, are supported on sturdy double footblocks.
