A massive sculpture of a Buddhist Deity carved in teak in the form of a mask head surmounted by a small carving of Ganesh. It is believed to be a representation of a Buddhist Door Guardian such sculptures would have been placed at an entrance or doorway of a building, a temple or home, to ward off evil. This sculpture is carved in six separate sections and is a splendid example of such works of art. He came to us from a large restaurant in East London.

A Baroque Dutch style iron & bronze large, three barred firegrate. The grate is surmounted by a pair of small bronze globe finials. The whole is supported to the front by tall bulbous bronze baluster andirons in ornate feet centred by lion masks with rings in their mouths. The plain bronze apron can be drawn out to reveal a tray for ashes.

A large cast iron and brass mounted Gothic Revival firegrate in the manner of A W N Pugin. The high, trefoil backplate, centred by a plain cartouche above an arch, has sides swooping down to the low two barred grate. A pair of upright seated, brass lions mounted on spiral podiums and holding simple, escutcheon shaped shields, form the integral andirons raised on large peg feet.
English late 19th century.

A large and imposing Statuary and Connemara marble Neoclassical style chimneypiece very much in the Palladian manner of Isaac Ware. The wide stepped shelf rests above a band of substantial dentil carving, beneath which lies a Connemara marble frieze centred with a large statuary marble tablet depicting playful cherubs riding an eagle, the tablet is flanked by bold statuary carvings of mythical dragons. The paterae endblocks sit above plain, tapering Connemara columns on the jambs.

The Palladian style was named after the Venetian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) whose work and ideas were based on the symmetry and perspective of the formal classical temple architecture of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. His work hugely influenced European architecture from the early 17th century to the present day.

A large Victorian fine mahogany breakfront bookcase and secretaire. The upper part has four compartments, the doors of which are glazed with their original plate glass revealing the adjustable shelving within, The doors themselves have ornate scrolls and leaf detail in the corners of the frames. The lower section divides into three parts. The central two door cupboard, bearing the same ornate scroll detail, is flanked by a pair of further plate glass glazed doors with ornate scroll detail.

Above the cupboard is a drawer like panel, with ebony inlaid pearl handles, which folds down to reveal the leather topped secretaire desk with six small drawers beneath a row of cubby holes.

A Renaissance stone door casement, carved in dark grey Pietra Serena stone. The elegant overdoor takes the form of a concave scallop shell, a motif derived from Roman sarcophagi, which later became a Christian symbol of rebirth, resurrection and pilgrimage. This suggests that the doorway was perhaps an entrance to a place of worship. Beneath this, stylised dolphins are carved nose to tail, undulating across the now weathered surface, worn after centuries of exposure to the elements. Supporting this are carved capitals and jambs decorated with urns and foliate details.

Northern/Central Italian, possibly Florentine. A very similar door is on display in the Victorian and Albert Museum's Renaissance Gallery.

Restoration not possible.

The Dalquharran Castle Chimneypiece.

A very rare, gently concave Portland Stone fireplace designed by Robert Adam and carved by the renowned Dutch stonemason Pieter Mathias van Gelder.

A moulded shelf rests above a simple frieze centred by a panel carved in relief with a floor standing globe flanked by opposing sphinxes. The endblocks, with carved lyres and husk swags, sit above fern frond corbels terminating in festooned bucrane on fielded panel jambs raised on stepped footblocks.
English, circa 1790.

Dalquharran Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland, is regarded as one of the finest examples of Robert Adam’s Castle Style. His castles were unique in the respect that whilst the outside embodied the robustness associated with a castle, the inside was the embodiment of his restrained and delicate classical style. Dalquharran Castle was created for Thomas Kennedy of Dunure but is sadly now a ruin after the roof was removed in 1967 to avoid paying rates.

The chimneypiece was originally installed in the round tower library of the Castle and epitomised Adam's classical elegance. The last image below shows it in situ in the ruins of the library. It is exceptionally rare to find such a piece and made even more remarkable as it survived virtually undamaged. There is a similarly fine chimneypiece at Seton Castle, Adam’s final project in Scotland.

A large Victorian carved mahogany overmantel mirror in the Neoclassical manner. The stepped top rests above a band of alternating bosses and fluting flanked by stylised corinthian topped flutted columns. The bevelled glass is enhanced by a most attractive frame of etched and cut foliate detail.

Provenance.

Removed from the Greyhound pub, Fulham palace road, London. The Greyhound was a famous music venue in the 1970s and 80s, it played host to bands such as, Status Que, Uriah heep, Average white band, Thin lizzy, the Stranglers and the Jam, plus many others. It also featured punk music in the late 1970s.

A pair of George III carved pine chimneypiece jambs. The garlanded figures are of Bacchus, God of the Grape Harvest, who enjoyed, riotous ,Bacchanalian celebrations, and Ceres, Goddess of Agriculture specifically the cultivation of wheat, grains and corn. Appropriately, abundant, trailing festoons of grapes on one and wheat and grains on the other, descend the tapering, volute columns. Photos before restoration.

A beautifully painted and stained glass set of three tall Victorian internal doors and overdoor which could be used in an entrance lobby, as room dividers or as the entrance to a conservatory. The central door glass has a vase filled with fruit and sprigs on a stylised pedestal beneath a garland in the classical style. It is surrounded by exuberant, golden acanthus fronds and descending bellflowers and is set within a green bellflower and folaite paterae painted glass frame. The design is echoed on the glass of each door and that of the overdoor. English, circa 1870.

A substantial burnished steel and cast iron Victorian fire basket in the Georgian manner with a shaped backplate. The two barred grate, with a curved pierced apron, is surmounted by a pair of small urn finials and is supported by two tall bulbous andirons on scrolled and pegged feet. English, circa 1870.

A carved, armorial panel depicting a triumphant, seated Boudica styled figure wearing a flowing robe and plumed hat, flourishing a staff bearing a Spanish helmet; and a lion rampant brandishing a sword and arrows. The central arched panel is framed within decorative gadrooned and foliate borders and is surmounted by a pair of stylised dolphins between three rosette medallions. It bears the words 'Oro Patria' which translate as 'gold' and 'homeland'.

The panel relates to the Netherlands, Eighty Years War of Independence(1568–1648) a revolt of Seventeen Provinces of what are today the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

The arched rectangular central panel and pictorial, patriotic scene is typical of Dutch fireback designs. An image of a 17th century Dutch fireback with a similar depiction can be seen in the last image below.

An un-restored Patterson Edwards 'Leeway' of London dapple grey rocking horse on a pine & beechwood cradle and complete with a stud saddle, reins and stirrups. A label bearing the brand name 'Leeway' can be seen to the back of the upper stand. Rocking horses by this maker are easily identified by the general shape of the body, rather large hooves, the shape of the mouth and square stand columns. Leeway made this particular model between 1890 to 1947 a/f.

The squared tops of the tool rests with profiles of noblemen framed in laurel wreaths, above reeded columns and fleur de lys, are supported on scrolled, splayed feet. A pair of small and rare Pietra Dura panels. Each finely made panel is a depiction of a flamboyant cavaliere in 16th century dress on green, white and black marble backgrounds. Pietra Dura is a term for the technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished coloured stones to create images. Lapis Lazuli was frequently used as seen here in the sleeves, cloak and feathers worn by the cavaliere. The art was developed during the Florentine Renaissance and was often called ‘painting in stone’. It is a most difficult skill to do well and requires expertise in the arts of sculpture, inlay, and mosaic.

The panels are in their original gilded, wooden frames but unfortunately the gilding has been painted over in such a way as to make it very difficult to remove. Please see the last image, One solution would be to cover the paint with lacquer which would greatly improve their appearance. Photographs before restoration.

A finely carved, silvered pine and gesso headboard or overdoor panel. in the English Regency manner. Shaped in the stele style with scrolling shoulders and surmounted by a pierced akroter crest.
