Highly detailed and decorative copper-engraved city maps of six fortified cities comprising Bruges, Brussels, Lisle (Lille), Ghent, Mechlin (Mechelen) and Béthune.

The maps are embellished with numbered tables of explanation indicating churches, monasteries, palaces, city gates & numerous markets, including those dedicated to corn, hogs, cheese, herbs, veal, milk, flax, & wood. The maps also depict roads, waterways, bridges, city walls & gates, & showing trees, boats on the waterways & houses in outline.

These maps were published to illustrate Mr. Tindal's translation of Mr. Rapin's History of England, which was considered one of the few comprehensive histories written during the period. Tindal then wrote a three-volume 'Continuation', including the reigns of James II to George II. They were engraved by Isaac Basire.

Isaac Basire (1704-68) was an renowned map engraver. He is often remembered for a great number of maps he engraved for Tindall's continuation of Rapin de Thoyras' History of England. He also contributed maps to the Gentleman's magazine. He was the first of his generation in a line of engravers, but was arguably the most successful.

Paul de Rapin (25 March 1661[1] – 25 April 1725), sieur of Thoyras (and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), was a French historian writing under English patronage. His History of England, written and first published in French in 1724–27, was an influential exposition of the Whig view of history on both sides of the English Channel.

Nicolas Tindal (1687-1774) was Rector of Alverstoke in Hampshire, Vicar of Great Waltham, Essex, Chaplain of Greenwich Hospital and a Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford. He translated Frenchman Paul de Rapin's History of England, one of the few comprehensive histories written at that time. Tindal then wrote a three-volume 'Continuation', including the reigns of James II to George II.

Strong and dark impression, margins narrow, with original folds, as issued. Original colour. Published by Nicholas Tindal, c.1737.

An antique Chinese blue and white calabash vase. The vase is hand painted with the 'dragon chasing the flaming pearl' motif. A rare 19th century marble statue of the muse Terpsichore, after Antonio Canova. Terpsichore was the muse of creative inspiration, and here she is identified by the lyre on which she leans.

Canova was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte's brother to create this idealised portrait of his wife Alexandrine de Bleschamp as Terpsichore. The commission was then acquired by Giovanni Battista Sommariva, a politician and notable patron of the arts. Under his patronage, the sculpture was no longer required to resemble Alexandrine and so the sensual sculpture took on the deified form of the muse. He collected three marble sculptures by Canova for his villa and also acquired the plaster model for Terpsichore so it could not be reproduced whilst under his ownership. Sommariva sent the sculpture to Paris in 1813, where is was exhibited at the Salon to great acclaim.
Copies of this statue are very rare.

French, late 19th century. Carved from pure white statuary marble. With restorations.

A large Italian school carrara marble sculpture depicting a sleeping nymph. The finely carved sculpture is reminiscent of a depiction of Sleeping Ariadne, popularised by the Roman copy of the Hellenistic original, the former being housed at the Vatican. Reclining on rocks, the sleeping nymph is shown draped only below the waist, and her finely modelled form is exemplified by the delicacy of her fingers.

A rare Scottish 19th century alabaster bust of Sir Walter Scott, after the original by Sir Francis Chantrey. The bust depicts Scott with an intelligent gaze, a lowland plaid over his shoulders.
    Scottish, c.1840.

    Photograph before restoration.

Notes: Chantrey's original bust was made in 1820 and given to Scott in 1828 'as a token of esteem'. Scott wrote to his wife on 20 March 1820, 'Chantrey's bust is one of the finest things he ever did. It is quite the fashion to go to see it - there's for you' (J. G. Lockhart, Life of Sir Walter Scott, III, p 377) Sir Francis Chantrey's 1820 bust of Sir Walter Scott portrays the author with his head turned slightly to the right and a Lowland plaid arranged round his shoulders as in this rare copy. James Hogg wrote that 'Sir Walter Scott in his study, and in his seat in the Parliament-house, had rather a dull, heavy appearance, but in company his countenance was always lighted up, and Chantrey has given the likeness of him there precisely' (Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott, p. 113.).

A very fine and large mid nineteenth-century Gothic Revival bracket clock in richly figured walnut, with a silvered dial.

The clock has a good quality English eight day, twin fusee, four pillar movement with anchor escapement, which strikes the hours on a single gong.
The profusely engraved silvered arched dial with Roman numerals has two subsidiary dials, namely; strike or silent and slow or fast. The chapter ring, signed by the London jewellers Halton & Slocombe, 63 Moorgate St, London, (probably the retailer rather than the maker) is framed by finely engraved spandrels. The walnut case which retains its original colour and polish, is the perfect embodiment of the Gothic Revival. The case is topped with carved finials and supported by a pair or columns with acanthus leaf capitals, all set upon a heavily moulded plinth on carved bun feet, whilst the dial is framed by a simple arched glazed door.
    English, circa 1815.

Note, the original silvering on the dial has in the past suffered some scratching from the hour had. The dial can be re-silvered if desired, at no extra cost.
