A fine early 18th century Queen Anne walnut cabinet on chest, in a beautifully figured walnut veneer. The top section comprises a cushion frieze, which opens to reveal a hidden chart drawer, over the cross-banded double door cabinet which opens to reveal a fully fitted interior of drawers and pigeonholes.
A waist moulding separates the two parts of the piece with an arrangement of two short over two long drawers in highly figured feather banded walnut, oak lined with brass handles.
English, c.1710 with later 18th century modifications.

A very fine and rare Anglo-Indian carved oak box settle in teak, very much based on the form of an Italian cassone. The back features three magnificently carved vignettes depicting an elephant fighting a tiger amongst palm trees, a ship at sea and lastly, a group of noblemen being drawn by oxen in a fine cart. These panels are bordered by a trailing vine decoration. The subjects would suggest a southern Indian, or possibly Ceylonese origin. The sinuous scrolling arms are carved to depict a mythical creature and they frame the box seat with a hinged lid, which has an elaborately pierced front panel.

A very fine three door Victorian, ebonized, ormolu and inlaid Credenza. The three doors, two of which are glazed are separated by turned, carved, gilded and ebonised columns, supporting a delicately inlaid frieze with ormolu detail. The central door is finely and profusely inlaid in the italianate manner with Amboyna and Box on a Harewood ground surrounded by Acanthus ormolu panel mouldings and Amboyna fielding, which is echoed on the glazed doors. The lower frieze with further inlay is supported on short turned and ebonised legs. The polished Mahogany interior is fitted with shelves finished with Harewood and Box edging.

An exceptionally fine late Renaissance walnut cabinet from Tuscany. The two-part cabinet comprises an upper section of three cupboards concealing double shelves, and three drawers, divided by slender pilasters. The lower section is the inverse, and is supported on ionic capital feet. It also possesses early locks, and associated key.
This cabinet is characteristic of pieces that were made for the residences of Tuscan nobles during the late-Renaissance, and exhibits regional characteristics associated with furniture made in this region. Very few pieces of this quality survive from this period.
Italian, c.1590. With restorations, commensurate with age.

A superb octagonal centre table in the manner of Thomas King. The fine octagonal top in book matched pollard oak veneer, inlaid with a satinwood border, on a pit sawn oak top. This rests on four spiral twist legs joined by scrolling stretchers and is raised on bun feet with concealed castors.
English, c.1840.
In 1835, the cabinet maker Thomas King published 'Specimens of Furniture in the Elizabethan & Louis Quatorze Styles', and this table is reminiscent of the designs printed in this publication. Thomas King was a much admired cabinet maker and published over a dozen pattern books during his career.

An Aesthetic Movement ebonised and parcel gilt centre or library table by Maple and Co, Tottenham Court Road, London. The gilt and painted panelled frieze with a single lockable draw is decorated with stylised foliage and sunflowers with carver foliate details to the corners. All supported on turned legs and a lower shelf with galleried ends, above a double stretcher with turned spindles. The top edge of the draw is stamped MAPLE & CO.
English, circa 1880.
Established in 1841, Maple and Co were leading makers and retailers of fine furniture, operating from their warehouse and showroom on Tottenham Court Road. They enjoying international acclaim, and had an outfit in Paris in order to satiate the continents appetite for their wares.

A late 19th century Japanese Meiji period 1868-1912, cabinet or Shodana, profusely decorated with parquetry and marquetry in a variety of woods on a Japanese elm carcass. This cabinet is fitted with various drawers, sliding doors and shelves which are mounted with silver plated handles. A very interesting and useful piece of furniture.

A pair of exceptionally delicate and unusual Victorian sycamore chairs. The slender balloon backs are intricately carved with foliage and centred by a blooming peace lily. The caned seats are in very good condition and are set above turned legs that gently taper and turn out.
These chairs would be best suited - and were probably intended - for light or decorative use, perhaps as bedroom chairs.

It features a lift up lid with marquetry inlaid scene depicting lovers dancing to the music of a mandolin, bordered by micromosaic, beneath which is an oval silvered mirror. Additionally, there are 2 locking drawers. The table is supported on slender tapered legs and a beautifully turned stretcher.

An elegant 19th century Gothic Revival glazed bookcase of small proportions and excellent quality. The figured mahogany case is mounted with two pairs of glazed doors, both carved with fine tracery reminiscent of Gothic windows. Inside the bookcase, there is a total of six adjustable shelves, with fine mahogany nosings.
English, c.1840.
This bookcase would sit well at the side of a chimneybreast, and is a very useful piece of furniture.

A German Neo-Gothic oak armchair attributed to Edwin Oppler (1831-1880). The chair bears the inscription 'Ernst is das leben, heiter die kunst', or 'Life is Serious, Art is Cheerful' on wonderfully carved banners unfurling amongst Gothic tracery. The motto is taken from Friedrich Schiller's Wallenstein Trilogy of 1800. The chair is beautifully carved and the letter G is inscribed within a shield on the top rail. It has been suggested that this is to indicate George V, son of Ernst August the last King of Hanover.
German, c.1850. Later upholstery.
Edwin Oppler was a well-regarded German Jewish Architect, and a proponent of the Neo-Gothic style. He came to know the Gothic style when he worked on the restoration of Notre Dame in Paris. His style then evolved to encompass what had so inspired him in this great Gothic masterpiece. His connection with George V arose when he took over the project of Schloss Marienburg from Conrad Wilhelm Hase in 1864, where he also designs furniture that shares many characteristics with this chair.
In his career, he went on to design many synagogues, all of which were tragically destroyed during Kristallnacht.

A pair of late Victorian display cabinets, ebonised and chequer inlaid with amboyna and purplewood, in the Aesthetic Movement style. Each cabinet has running gilt brass mounts, a baluster gallery above a pair of glazed doors enclosing two adjustable shelves, over a bevelled mirror inset back panel and ring turned front columns, with a chevron inlaid frieze below, above a pair of glazed doors enclosing two shelves each.
Provenance:
By family repute the cabinets were made by the great grandfather of the previous owner. His surname was Savigear and evidently he executed them whilst he was working for the Soho based cabinet making firm of Frauer and Sons, most likely during the 1890s. Frederick Frauer appears listed as a cabinet maker located on 46 Greek Street, Soho, in the Dictionary of British and Irish Furniture Makers, 1500-1914.

A superb Victorian walnut and solid ebony Gothic library table. This outstanding table is made especially rare by having solid ebony legs, stretcher and finials. The beautifully carved Solomonic legs and stretcher support a fine burr walnut top.
This table is incredibly diverse, and can be used as a centre table, or even a desk.

A 19th century carved walnut French cabinet. The moulded top above a frieze of alternating diamond and corbel carved detail, beneath which in the upper section are three cupboards whose doors open to reveal double shelving. Each door, with ornate scrolled brass escutcheons, is finely carved with classical motif panels and is separated by slim columns. Twin pairs of which flank either side.
A pair of wide ribbed drawers, with large brass handles, supported by a pair or sturdy, fluted columns, separate the upper section from a twin cupboard lower section the doors of which are beautifully carved with ornate strapwork designs. The doors open to single shelving and the whole cupboard is raised on large bun feet.
French, circa 1880.

A beautifully carved Gothic Revival walnut centre table. The rectangular top, with podium corners above pendant finials reminiscent of Gothic ceiling bosses, sits above a carved, linked quatrefoil frieze with central panels of blind fret interlaced arches. It is supported on four ornate columned legs on stepped curved feet and between each pair are boldly carved side stretchers with pairs of tall arches flanking ornately scrolled carvings akin to Gothic tracery.

An ornate four fold leather backed screen with painted panels held by leather bands and metal stud work. Each panel is painted in the Baroque manner with depictions of birds, vines and flowers within decorative borders. The panels are almost certainly 19th century or earlier and have been re-lined and mounted on the later screen which is backed with leather panels.
19th century, possibly Italian or Spanish.
Provenance: Hadspen House, Castle Cary, Somerset.

A William IV mahogany card, games or side table. The top, with flame mahogany veneer with cross band borders and with ebony stringing, pivots through ninety degrees and the flap can then be lowered to form a square table. When lifted storage for games is revealed. When the top flaps are closed there can be seen an unusual barrel frieze. The central support is wrapped around with Greek Revival floral and foliate detail repeated on the four scrolled feet with the original brass castors neatly concealed within. Manner of Thomas Hope. Antique furniture
Antique furniture is almost infinite in its variety. From the most humble of beginnings, furniture characterises its period, taking on the influences of the age.
For example, Victorian furniture represents the 19th century British interest in earlier periods, and the style of the furniture reflects the age’s influences, such as the Gothic, Renaissance and Jacobean eras. Antique oak furniture has endured the centuries, and remains very popular, especially in period, or country residences. Victorian furniture made of oak often emulated the 16th and 17th century style of fine furniture, to decorate the 19th century home in a revival style.
Antique French furniture
Antique French furniture also offers a large variety of styles, from the understated farmhouse style, where fruitwoods are simply carved and joined into tables, chairs and beds. Fine antique French furniture utilised the beauty of more exotic woods, such as mahogany, rosewood and kingwood and paired it with the gleaming ormolu mounts often seen on the opulent Louis XV furniture of the 18th century and later revivals. The later French Empire style was more neoclassical, and became sought after all over Europe.
Antique bedroom furniture
Antique bedroom furniture is an often overlooked area, but such a room can be transformed by the addition of period pieces. Whether antique beds to make a statement, or a pair of elegant and understated antique chairs, these details add character and depth. Antique bedroom furniture could also feature antique screens, an excellent way of creating a partition in a room for a dressing area or even a bath.
Antique tables and chairs
In a principal room, there are a few essential pieces of antique furniture that give the interior character. An antique table is an incredibly versatile antique, whether the smallest occasional table, or a grand antique dining table surrounded by a set of 19th century dining chairs. An antique chair is also a lovely way of introducing an antique, as they can be easily incorporated by upholstering them to suit the scheme of the room.
