'Dance of the Maenads' Large Plaster Relief After the Antique

'Dance of the Maenads', a large decorative plaster relief after the 5th Century Greek panels attributed to Callimachus which were lost or destroyed, but immortalised in later Roman copies, the most notable of which are housed at the Prado, Madrid.
This panel is a celebration of the late classical Greek style, which luxuriated in billowing drapery, dynamic form and capturing subjects in motion. Here, one of Dionysus' female retinue holds a thyrsus - a staff made of giant fennel and topped with a pinecone - and dances in ecstasy.

This particular copy was created for the tv show, 'Outlander' and is first seen in Season 2, Ep. 2, 'Not in Scotland Anymore', and is shown on the facade of a Parisian house.
