A Good Victorian Aesthetic Period Ebonised Writing Desk or Bonheur du Jour by Maple & Co. of London. The top with pierced brass gallery above twin cupboard doors each set with a painted porcelain tile designed by Walter Crane. To the left, we see the tile 'Who Killed Cock Robin', mirrored by 'How does my lady's garden grow'.
Beneath, flanking a carved and gilt-highlighted recess, the writing surface set with a tooled tan leather skiver above apron set with an arrangement of five drawers and kneehole recess, raised on ring-turned and fluted supports with under tier united by a spindle 'gallery' stretcher, the drawers set with stylised pierced brass handles and the desk with further gilt-highlighted detail throughout, stamped Maple & Co. to upper right drawer.
