Stock No.6616
A large and grand Italian Renaissance Revival chimneypiece in a very softly veined Carrara marble. The deep stepped shelf is moulded and carved with a deep egg and dart. Below this, is a beautifully carved frieze centred by a green man and Florentine rinceau decoration in low relief. This is flanked by endblocks, carved with a central scallop shell surround by Roman dolphins. Below this, the underfrieze is carved with a bead-and-reel moulding which rests on Romanesque capitals carved with eagles and acanthus leaves. These are supported by elaborately carved jambs, with more rinceau adornment, depicting an amorino holding a bird and balancing on a candlestick, in the manner of Piranesi. The opening made smaller with slips carved with a grapevine decoration.
Italian, perhaps Florence, c.1900.
