THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH PAINTING: An Aesthetic Movement Register Grate and Walnut Fire Surround. The fire surround has a breakfront shelf above a frieze with alternating rosette panelled designs, curiously the left set differs from those on the right, the frieze is centred by the initials EC and the date 1875, and the opening is set with Ashburton marble slips. The integral Register Grate has ten hand painted tiles, four of which depict 17th century Dutch Painters, who were of the Dutch Realist School of Genre Painting in Utrecht, Delft & Leiden or Amsterdam.

The painters are from the bottom left:
WOUTER CRABET(H) (1594 – 1644) The School of Delft and the most important Dutch Golden Age artist in the town of Gouda.
LEONARD BRAMER (1596 – 1667) The School of Delft an established painter of note who had studied in Italy & who later became a pupil of Rembrandt.
REMBRANDT Harmensz van Rijn (1606 – 1669) whose artistic ability could not be contained within the confines of Dutch Realism. A grand manner artist in his depictions of the drama of the Bible and an acute portraitist, including many famous portraits of himself, capturing the complete range of human emotions.
GERARD DOU (1613 – 1675) a pupil of Rembrandt & founder of the Painters Guild of Leiden another Dutch Golden Age painter he specialised in genre scenes & was noted for his trompe l’oeil and candlelit night-scenes.
English Dated 1875.

NOTE- The walnut surround was probably manufactured by Gillows of Lancaster as they manufactured the original furnishings for the property in Windemere from which this fireplace was removed.
