A Reformed Gothic centre table of the most exceptional quality. Carved from oak, the table has a thick round top in quartered oak, its frieze carved with a chevron moulding and inlaid with ebonised lozenges. This is mounted over a pedestal base of extraordinary design, with a central columnar stem enclosed by four slender pilasters with ebonised shafts. The Gothic stepped supports are architectural in form and very much reminiscent of the work of Charles Bevan.
English, c.1860.
Awaiting further research, but likely to be workshop of Charles Bevan.

A set of six Victorian Aesthetic mahogany dining chairs, designed by Bruce Talbert (1839-1881) for Gillows.
These chairs are reupholstered and ready for covering in a fabric of your choice.
English, c.1870. Each chair stamped Gillows on the back leg.
Notes: Bruce James Talbert was a pre-eminent Scottish architect and designer renowned for his furniture designs. He moved away from the heaviness often associated with the Victorian period, and embraced a lighter more innovative approach to styles such as the Gothic Revival and the Aesthetic Movement.

A very fine Italian secretary cabinet, bookcase in burr walnut, the epitome of the Italian Baroque. This grand cabinet is surmounted by a broken pediment, mounted with three giltwood figures, over a pair of glazed doors enclosing open shelves and interior lined in blue silk. This rests on the bureau base, the fall veneered with a particularly dramatic piece of burr walnut, which reveals a fitted interior of three small drawers and open compartments. Beneath this, there are three drawers of arc-en-arbalète or crossbow form.
Italian, possibly the Veneto, c.1740.

A charming hand-painted and ebonised four seater chair-back settee. The top rail is decorated with four pastoral scenes within oval vignettes, the backs centred by a scallop decoration and the uprights and arms are decorated with trailing foliage and berries. The overstuffed seat is covered in a silk damask, but could be re-covered in a fabric of your choice and is supported by the turned legs, painted with further foliate decoration. A wonderful survival!

An exceptionally fine Brazilian rosewood and lacquer cabinet bookcase incorporating a suite of five chinoiserie lacquered panels. It is most likely that this piece of furniture was designed as a celebration of Eastern influence on European furniture making. The japanned panels depict mountainous landscapes, figures riding through the landscape, pagodas and boats against a deep red ground. The style is reminiscent of 17th century Chinese lacquerwork, although certainly made in England by a specialist japanner. Lacquerwork of this quality was highly prized, so we believe this piece of furniture was designed around the panels, with a nod to Chinese forms, namely the four pagoda finials to the top. The rest of the cabinet embodies the elegant restraint of the Regency period, with a serpentine backboard, and three doors enclosed a fitted interior.
The fine interior includes adjustable shelves and a drop down writing slope in tooled green leather, which reveals pigeonholes in birdseye maple. The ormolu mounts are synonymous with the work of Bond Street cabinetmaker George Oakley (c.1760–1840) and the use of fine rosewood, and excellent construction, are all signatures of his work.

A pretty Victorian Aesthetic movement gilded and ebonised writing desk or bonheur du Jour. The top with an ebonised balustrade of turned spindles above a pair of doors with hand painted panels, framed by gilt mouldings and Amboyna wood. The panels depict a pair of medieval loves exchanging love notes by dove, on an architectural Gothic background. Opening the doors reveals a delicate interior in birch and satin birch, with fretwork valencing and further fretwork to the front of the letter rack, over two rosewood draws with flush boxwood knobs. The draw to the base contains an adjustable, tooled leather writing slope and to the right, a pen holder and the original glass inkwell. All supported on slender ebonised, carved and gilded turned legs, with ceramic casters, separated by a stretcher and shelf.

A very large late sixteenth century 'Nonsuch' chest with extensive marquetry and original hinges and lock. This vast chest conforms to the 'Nonsuch' model, with dovetailed boards and marquetry inspired by the architectural prints of the period. Extant examples of these chests are very rare, so we are delighted to have it one our collection.
English, late 16th century with separate 17th century base.
Notes: Chests such as these were sometimes thought to have been made in Germany, but it is now known that they were made in London - particularly Southwark - by German and Netherlandish immigrants from about 1560. In the twentieth century, these chests gained the name of 'Nonsuch chests' as the marquetry was wrongly thought to depict Henry VIII's Nonsuch Palace in Surrey.

A very fine single door Victorian, ebonized, ormolu and inlaid pier or side cabinet. The single glazed door is flanked by a pair of turned, ebonised columns with ormolu Corinthian capitals, supporting the frieze. Which is finely and profusely inlaid in the Italianate manner with Amboyna and Box on a Harewood ground with further ormolu detail. The interior retains its original, now pleasantly faded plush, this is fitted with two shelves, finished with Harewood and Box edging. All set beneath a generously moulded Amboyna and Harewood top.

A heavily enriched Regency card table in flame mahogany and inlaid with brass. The foldover top with a baize interior rests over a beautifully carved and inlaid frieze which in turn is mounted on a tapering square baluster raised on a concave quadripartite base with floral paterae and reeded scroll legs terminating in brass caps on castors.

The armorial is unidentified, but the same emblem has been used for the Tell family in the early 19th century.

A fine Napoleon III period secrétaire à abattant. This secretaire has a carcass in ebonised pearwood, inlaid with fine marquetry; and the fall front door is decorated with a central urn and scrolling acanthus, bell husks and flowering stems. This encloses the drop down writing surface, revealing a niche and four maple drawers, also inlaid with foliate marquetry. Beneath this surface there are four further drawers flanked by fluted pilasters. The whole is supported on elegant, turned feet.

A large and generous William IV extending dining table in mahogany, which can seat twelve when fully extended. The rectangular top comprises five leaves when fully extended, the two main leaves have gently rounded corners. A fine and exceptionally rare Chinese Chippendale mahogany triple fold over table in a beautifully figured Cuban mahogany. The detail of the blind fretwork carved frieze extends to the legs and embodies the Chippendale style. The triple fold over top incorporates a tea table, a baize card surface with counter dishes and also a games surface with a backgammon and chessboard.
A wonderful and whimsical example of Georgian ingenuity, utilising a single table for a range of functions, whilst maintaining the elegant restraint of the Georgian style.

A striking Portuguese rosewood contador with brass mounts. Reminiscent of the 17th century style, this cabinet has one single top drawer and six lower drawers bordered by the ripple moulding that is also echoed on the pediment and the base of the cabinet. This is raised on a decorative stand with a foliate apron and bulbous spiral turned legs united by stretchers of the same form.

A rare and beautiful Chinese export table with extensive mother of pearl inlay. The tripod table is carved from walnut, and the fiery mother of pearl is most likely abalone shell, with a beautiful opalescence that changes with the light, bringing the decoration of flowers, mons and butterflies bordering a central battle scene, to life.

A rare set of six William and Mary high-backed dining chairs in oak. This fine set of chairs is a provincial example of the walnut chairs with caned backs that were popularised in the late 17th century. This set of chairs is a remarkable survival, with no damage to their pedimented panelled backs, finials, scrollwork front rails and turned legs.
Originally, they might have had squab cushions for added comfort, and we can have these made for you if desired.

A fine 18th century giltwood console table. The gilded surface is wonderfully worn, with the warm red bole coming through. The frieze has low relief decoration very much aligned with the Venetian tradition, and this frames the faux marble top (later). The scrolled legs are supported by large baluster feet and united by a scrollwork stretcher embellished with bellflowers.
Northern Italian, c.1700.
The current top, painted in a green faux marble finish, can be replaced with your choice of marble top if desired, although the current top is quite charming and probably 19th century in date.

A fine George III period mahogany silver table, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale. This table has a beautiful colour and patina, the figured mahogany rectangular top with plain gallery is set over a finely pierced fretwork frieze and spandrels of scrolling acanthus leaf, supported on square legs with block feet, which retain their original brass castors, these are separated by the arching, x-form fretwork stretcher, decorated with further scrolling acanthus leaf decoration, all centred with a single turned finial.

An early Regency twin pedestal sideboard attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, in flame mahogany with a bowed tablet frieze which is flanked by two dovetailed drawers and a lower cupboard to the left, and a single dovetailed drawer mounted with a wine holder and lower cupboard to the right. The central frieze is fitted with two long drawers, the upper mounted with a central bullseye very much in the Regency manner. All drawers are mounted with brass ringed lion mask pulls. The drawers and cupboard fronts are solid mahogany, the rest of the carcass being constructed from oak. This sideboard is very much in the manner of John Soane. English or Scottish, c.1800.

A fine and large 18th century Dutch flame Mahogany press cupboard of architectural form. The broken pediment with a dentil moulding, is supported by Corinthian pilasters with gilt brass capitals. These frame the double doors with elegant beaded mouldings, which enclose shelves and two short drawers. The base comprises three long drawers, with canted corbel returns.
Dutch, mid-18th century.

An unusual George I 'mulberry' cabinet in the manner of Coxed and Woster. The cross banded and veneered walnut doors reveal a fine fitted interior which is also beautiful veneered, including a number of hidden drawers, which are beautifully scumbled.
English, c.1710, with restorations.
Notes: It is now widely accepted that much furniture which was commonly thought to be 'mulberry' is in fact stained burr elm, walnut, maple or alder. The popularity of these veneers in the 1690-1730 period is thought to stem from its tortoiseshell like appearance. If mulberry wood is ebonised to reinforce its markings it does not take the staining effectively whereas with elm, walnut, maple and alder the porous parts of the woods retain the dark streaks giving this dramatic tortoiseshell-like appearance.

Antique furniture
Antique furniture is almost infinite in its variety. From the most humble of beginnings, furniture characterises its period, taking on the influences of the age.
For example, Victorian furniture represents the 19th century British interest in earlier periods, and the style of the furniture reflects the age’s influences, such as the Gothic, Renaissance and Jacobean eras. Antique oak furniture has endured the centuries, and remains very popular, especially in period, or country residences. Victorian furniture made of oak often emulated the 16th and 17th century style of fine furniture, to decorate the 19th century home in a revival style.
