A tall and beautifully carved Carrara Marble statue of Eiar, Goddess of Springtime and one of the Goddesses of The Four Seasons. She is standing on an octagonal plinth and is holding a tumbling festoon of flowers representing the abundance of Springtime. She may have come from the gardens of an English country estate. As found before restoration. English, mid to late 19th century.
Notes: The Four Seasons were depicted in mythology as the personification of nature in its different seasonal aspects. Theros (Summer), Phthinoporon (Autumn), and Cheimon (Winter) were the other three. They were said to guard the gates of Olympus, promoting the fertility of the earth and both presiding over and directing the stars and constellations.

ECHOS OF EMPIRE.
An enormous and grand Gothic Revival sandstone throne made to commemorate Queen Victoria`s Golden Jubilee of 1887. The pitched gable back with raised and carved foliate mantle enclosing the VR crowned cartouche with laurel leaves and Jubilee banner terminating in mask heads flanking a broad seat and chamfered plinth base.
Scottish late 19th century.

A rare Bronze Fountain Group attributed to David Rawnsley (1909- 1977).
Sculptor, Painter, Ceramicist, Film Art Director & Production Designer.
A delightful, unique and beautifully sculpted Fountain of an entwined Mermaid & Merboy resting on rocks by the sea, both are twin tailed. The Merboy holds a large fish from whose mouth a water spout falls into the clam shell beneath. There is another water spout emanating from the abalone shell held above his head. The Mermaid is holding the clam shell in which lies a large starfish. A crab, a lobster and an octopus are climbing the rock beneath and nearby are limpets and coral.
Mermaids & Merboys are legendary figures appearing throughout the centuries in the folklore of many cultures and traditionally could symbolise either danger or good fortune. This pair are of course beneficent. English, circa 1960.
Notes: David Rawnsley was in his own words 'a jack of all trades'. Initially trained as an architect and engineer he entered the film industry in his early twenties as an art director & production designer. Film credits include: 49th Parallel, One of Our Aircraft is Missing, They Flew Alone and In Which We Serve. In the 40's and 50's he started up a series of potteries. The first in Paris was followed by the famous Chelsea Pottery in London in 1952 and later by one in the Bahamas and another in Mexico. His sister Una Hanbury (1904 – 1990) was a renowned Washington sculptor of horses and Rawnsley himself became an acknowledged artist and sculptor. His parents had settled the Rawnsley family on the Isle of Capri in the 1920's and in later years he set up a studio there. During a short visit in 1977 he died of a heart attack and he is buried on the Island. One of his last bronze sculptures, that of a young maiden made in 1972, is mounted on his grave.

A weathered 20th century Italian style composition stone fountain. A charming child,crouching on a rock above a pool, contemplates a tiny turtle climbing the rocks beside him. A water spout emanating from the mouth of a large snail at his feet spills into a boldly carved scallop shell basin which rests on an ornately carved baluster pedestal. English, 20th century.

One of five carved Portland Stone Plaques removed from the facade of St Thomas' Hospital. It is carved in the shape of a Shield and bears some of the symbols of the Hospitals Crest; a Cross, a Tudor Rose flanked by two Fleur de Lys and
a Spear - the original also bore a Fish on the Cross and a Chough ( associated with Thomas Beckett from whom the Hospital took it's name), in the top right quadrant.
The Hospital was moved from it's 17th century site in Southwark to new buildings in Lambeth Palace Road across the River Thames from The Houses of Parliament where it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871.
Early 20th century. A pair with SNo 13144.

THE FLEET

Provenance: Originally one of three keystones, representing historical London rivers, The Thames, The Fleet & The Walbrook, & part of a larger group including two statues of St George. This keystone was above the main entrance left hand bronze door of the One New Change building, part the Bank of England Annexe in the City of London
The building erected in the 1950s to accommodate the Bank of England's Accounts Department & demolished in 2007, occupied the whole site bounded by Cheapside to the north, Watling Street to the south, Bread Street to the east, Newgate to the north west and New Change to the west and filled a sensitive site in that it presented a backdrop to Christopher Wren's majestic Baroque St Paul’s Cathedral.
The Fleet is one of Londons lost rivers and was once the next largest to the Thames. It flowed south from Hampstead Heath and entered the Thames near Blackfriars Bridge. What is left of the once grand Fleet now flows in pipes buried deep under the streets of the city. Fleet Street..".The street of shame " , so called because of its many hostelries, is named after it.

OLD FATHER THAMES Keystone.

' Old Father Thames keeps rolling along, down to the mighty sea'...( Raymond Wallace )..The source of this great river is reputed to be in a field in Gloucestershire from where it begins a 215 mile journey eastwards passing through Oxford, called here by its Latin name of Isis; past Windsor Castle and Hampton Court; through London past the Houses of Parliament and The Tower and on down to Gravesend & the sea. Its strategic position has seen it at the centre of many historical events; it has supported human activity from its source to its mouth for thousands of years; provided water power, food and drink; has been a venue for spectacular entertaiments & acted as a major highway for international trade through the Port of London. Perhaps John Burns, MP for Battersea 1929, best described it as “Liquid History”.

Part of a collection of approximately 45 statues and carvings commissioned by the Bank of England to adorn it’s Annexe built in the 1950’s at One New Change in the City of London. They were removed prior to the building being demolished in 2007. This was one of three keystones above the entrance on Watling Street.
Notes: The building was erected to accommodate the Bank of England's Accounts Department and occupied the whole site bounded by Cheapside to the north, Watling Street to the south, Bread Street to the east, Newgate to the north west and New Change to the west. It was built on a World War II bomb site and was sensitively designed in that it presented a backdrop to Christopher Wrens majestic Roman Baroque St Paul’s Cathedral.

Antique Garden Furniture
Antique garden furniture and ornamentation is a great way to introduce character to an outside space, whether a sprawling garden, a small patio or even a balcony.
Antique garden furniture was built to last almost without exception, with both the materials and the craftsmanship involved being of a far greater quality than we expect from the modern equivalents.
If you are looking for a focal point it can be created with antique garden ornaments. The practice of garden embellishment originated with the Romans, who displayed copies of Greek statues in their villa gardens. Later, during the Renaissance period, Roman statuary was recovered to be incorporated into Italian gardens.
There is an enormously diverse range of garden furniture styles. Antique cast iron garden furniture goes far beyond the ornate Rococo style to the elegance of Regency design. There are also examples of gothic, arts and crafts and aesthetic pieces to name but a few! These are often sturdier and longer lasting than antique wooden garden furniture and they can also be painted in any colour of choice, or even leave the patina from decades of use.
Gardens can be intriguing places as well as places of leisure, rest and contemplation. Antique garden statues can create a focus or point of interest in a garden scheme. For example, Antique garden urns reflect the Roman and Greek vases of old. They are often made from terracotta, cast iron, stone and marble which all weather to develop a patina over the centuries. These can very quickly evoke the elegance and intrigue of a classical garden.
