An ornate Regency fireplace fender linked to Warwick Castle

Stock No.14264

A highly ornate and heavy, brass Regency fireplace fender with alternating cut acanthus leaf and palmette detail held between polished brass bands raised on three neat acanthus decorated feet. English, early 19th century.

Provenance: By repute the Earls of Warwick. There was an identical fender in the Red Drawing Room of the historic Medieval Warwick Castle before extensive renovation work was carried out in 2002. It is highly probable that it is one and the same fireplace fender. The third image shows it in the fireplace behind a fire screen in the early part of the 20th century.

Notes: Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, England, with its turbulent history, dates back to the 13th century when it was the home of the de Beauchamp family. It came under the stewardship of the Earls of Warwick and later the Greville family in the early part of the 17th century and remained as their private home until 1978. The property was then taken over by The Tussauds Group, which later became Merlin Entertainments Group in 2007 and remains under their guardianship today.
