A PERIOD LATE 18TH CENTURY GEORGE III ANTIQUE CHIMNEYPIECE CARVED IN WHITE STATUARY MARBLE. The moulded inverted breakfront shelf sits above a frieze centred by a rectangular tablet carved with a roundel of Cupid holding a bow. Cupid is attended by two winged putti holding a quiver of arrows while a pair of love birds fly in the foreground, suspended from ribbon tied drapery. The frieze panels are carved with crossed sheaves of wheat and the end blocks are carved with flowers, supported by three-quarter relief jambs with outset columns with Ionic capitals on block feet. Amost iidentical tablets can be found on chimneypieces in houses in Harley Street, please see the image below, and Portman Square in London.
