    A large cast iron triple arched French fireback with bead edging depicting a pair of rampant lions holding a oval bearing two crescent moons and four fleur de lys and surmounted by a crown and bearing the date 1302. Two lines of further flear de lys flank the oval. Possibly associated with the House of Valois of the Capetian Dynasty one of the oldest in Europe. French, circa 1870.

  • Stock: 14570

    An impressive 20th century armorial cast iron fire back with a nautical/marine theme. A pair of erect sea lions, each holding a spear, sit above the Latin motto " Fit Via Vi " that can be translated as “The way is forged by strength”. They are supporting a shield upon which can be seen a hand sinister above a pair of bishops mitres above a castle. The shield is surmounted by a coronet or crown above which is a galleon in full sail. Two further erect sea lions are top left and top right each holding an anchor. The fireback has a rope twist border broken at the top by the galleons mast.
    English, circa 1920.

    Notes: A heraldic sea lion is a mythical beast with the top half of an heraldic lion and the bottom half being that of a fish’s tail.

  • Stock: 14590

    A very large and spectacular 17th century fireback depicting crowned eagles supporting an armorial shield beneath a smaller eagle alighting on the shield. The initial H surmounted by crowns features in each corner (one H is broken). The name of the Marquise de May can be seen in the top border and the fireback is most likely associated with the Coat of Arms of Henri II de Lorraine, Comte de Chaligny, Marquis de Moy (1596-1672)' of the House of Lorraine. French, dated 1624.

    Dutch, probably a 19th century copy or the original 17th century one.

    A very large and heavy 16th century French cast iron fireback, emblazoned with the arms of King Charles IX of France who reigned from 1560-1574. These arms are surrounded by the collar of the French Order of St Michael, a French dynastic order of chivalry, founded by Louis XI of France on 1 August 1469.

    Dated 1570 purportedly from Le Château de Haroué in the Lorraine region of France. French, late 16th century.

    panels the central panel depicting a seated maiden possibly Minerva
    the Roman Goddess of wisdom, medicine and crafts. Her name is
    linked to the Latin word 'mens' meaning 'intellect' representing the intelligence and inventiveness of this Goddess.
