A fine pair of grand walnut doors, casements and overdoors carved and gilded in the French Renaissance manner. They were originally in Park Place a Grade II listed house set in 570 acres near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. The overdoors with arched pediments, centred by a large stylised shell flanked by ornate side scrolls, rest on the carved and gilded door surrounds again with the shell features. The upper panels of the doors are very finely carved with stylised dolphins, strapwork and cartouche each centred by lion masks carved in high relief. The lower panels with arched, raised and fielded panels. The doors are held on substantial rising butt brass hinges and the reverse side of each is set with plain raised and fielded panels. The house featured in the 2009 St Trinians film when the name Headmistress was affixed to the rear of one of the doors as can be seen in the last image. French, circa 1870.

Photos before restoration and please note that the doors can be sold separately.

Provenance: The doors were commissioned in the Renaissance style by the Noble family for Park Place which was built in the French Renaissance manner in 1871 by Architect Thomas Cundy.

Notes: John Noble bought the estate in 1869 and it stayed in the family until 1947 when it was auctioned off in a number of lots. The house was bought by the Middlesex County Council and in 1965 ownership was transferred to Hillingdon Council. The house and gardens were subsequently sold twice more during which time both were carefully restored and are now once again in private ownership.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is one of his great tragedies, chronicling the downfall of the iconic anti-hero as he realises his political ambitions. Macbeth carves a bloody path to the Scottish throne, spurred on by his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth and the prophesy of three witches.

In the third act, Macbeth hosts a banquet as the newly crowned King. Burdened by the cost of the crown he is distracted and Lady Macbeth emplores him to entertain his guests. Macbeth then stands to make the following lighthearted toast:

Sweet remembrancer! Now, good digestion wait on appetite, And health on both!

After this toast, the ghost of the murdered Banquo takes his place at the table and Macbeth's composure wavers...

This charming set of three Arts and Crafts stained glass window panels with scrolled banners bear these words spoken by Macbeth as a toast to his guests.

The first panel depicts a friar or monk bearing a boars' head on a platter, the second depicts a seated king (likely to be Macbeth) holding a goblet, the third is of a courtier or Queen (Lady Macbeth) holding a bowl of fruit. These panels would have perhaps been designed for a dining hall or even a theatre. English School circa 1900.

    THE GOOD SAMARITAN

A large and sumptuous arched antique Victorian stained glass window depicting The Parable of The Good Samaritan. Set within a frame the detailed figures, abundant foliage and rugged landscape are finely drawn and painted in green, red, gold, colbalt blue and ochre tones. From the flagon and bowl in the foreground to the soulful gaze of the donkey and out beyond to the distant citadel on the hillside there is a charm of design typical of the turn of the century era.

Originally part of a group removed in the 1980's from a church near Harrogate in Yorkshire it has recently been professionally restored.

    English late 19th century.

Notes: Parables were short stories based on everyday events that taught a moral or spiritual lesson. Jesus told many of them to his followers and in using the parable of The Good Samaritan he taught them to " Love thy neighbour as thyself' ". The story tells of a man who was robbed of everything he had while travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Two other travellers, a Priest and a Levite, showed no compassion for his state and passed him by but a third, a Samaritan, immediately came to his aid. Samaritans were considered a lower class of citizen by the general population because they had intermarried but this man put all aside and did not question the injured man's race or religion and saw only a person in great need of comfort and assistance.
A lesson for our time !

A spectacularly large stained glass window The studio that made the window is believed to be Ballantine's of Edinburgh. They were the leading studio in the east of Scotland, and indeed won the commission to produce a suite of windows for the House of Lords in Westminster. Ballantine's employed Daniel Cottier, one of the pre-eminent stained glass artists of the mid to late 19th century, in the early part of his career, and the painting in this window displays a flavour of his style. As it is not signed, it is difficult to determine that categorically. This extract from a poem is inscribed in the bottom panel:
"See Spring and Autumn teem with love
    The Maids beneath. Children above.
    All aiming fondly to endear
    To Pets who linger near".
