Stock No: 4691
4691. A RARE AND IMPORTANT LARGE GEORGE III SERPENTINE DOUBLE FRONTED SUMMER GRATE : This antique firebasket is from a design by Robert Adam, and probably made by Henry Jackson of nearby Saffron Hill in the late 18th early 19th century...see his trade card below.
An identical one is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington and there are also two in Spencer House, St. James's. It is in bright cut steel decorated with finials and fine etched spandrels and chamfered etched legs. Being a Summer Grate... the whole expensively decorated magnificent front lifts off to reveal a more simply etched front when a fire is lit, and replaced afterwards.
English, Circa 1840.
