A RARE PERIOD LATE GEORGIAN CHIMNEYPIECE IN THE GREEK / ETRUSCAN REVIVAL manner in White Statuary and Sienna marble with polychrome Scagliola inlaid decoration inspired by designs from Greek / Etruscan Antiquity. The white marble breakfronted shelf over an inlaid frieze, the centre tablet showing two robed coiffed maidens holding Bellflower swags linked to an urn on a pedestal, further swags and urns either side. There is a neat ropetwist carved detail around the opening behind the yellow Sienna marble ingrounds with which the jambs are panelled, as well as having scalloped fluted shoulders. Irish late 18th century.

PROVENANCE : The Scagliola inlay denotes its Irish / Italian original provenance, the manufacture being in the manner of Pietro Bossi, an Italian Stuccodore resident in Dublin in the 18th century. But it was recently removed from an 18th century Georgian Town House near the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.
