11354 Stock: 11354
11354. An 18th century, possibly much earlier, Gros and Petit Point needlepoint tapestry in the Flemish Medieval style, of a lady and courtier flanked by a Unicorn and Lion bearing standards, in the Millefleur tradition of the original, from which it is inspired. The original collection, known as " The Lady and the Unicorn " is a series depicting the six senses, this one representing " Hearing ", are displayed in the Musee de Cluny in Paris. Preliminary image.

COMMENTS : Needlepoint tapestry dates from Ancient Egypt, 1600 BC, and was practised by 15th century Flemish craftsmen in this case from designs for the French Court. In this tapestry the lady plays a portative organ on top of a table covered with a Turkish rug. Her maidservant stands to the opposite side and operates the bellows. The lion and unicorn once again frame the scene holding up the pennants. Just as on all the other original tapestries, the unicorn is to the lady's left and the lion to her right - a common denominator to all the tapestries. In our example the positions are reversed. The Lady and the Unicorn: "Hearing" one of the famous series of Hearing, Smell, Sight, Taste, Touch...and Desire. Research continues.

A RARE AND IMPORTANT LARGE GEORGE III SERPENTINE DOUBLE FRONTED SUMMER GRATE : This antique firebasket is from a design by Robert Adam, and probably made by Henry Jackson of nearby Saffron Hill in the late 18th early 19th century...see his trade card below. An identical one is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington and there are also two in Spencer House, St. James's. It is in bright cut steel decorated with finials and fine etched spandrels and chamfered etched legs. Being a Summer Grate... the whole expensively decorated magnificent front lifts off to reveal a more simply etched front when a fire is lit, and replaced afterwards.

9922 Stock: 9922
9922. AN IMPOSINGLY LARGE CHIMNEYPIECE AND OVERMANTEL carved in oak in the Tudor / Jacobean Renaissance manner. Extremely tall and with intriguing imagery and motifs at the different levels which include a series of four carved owls interspersed with scallop shells and Tudor roses carved into the lower frieze. The owls frequently found in armorial bearings & associated with wisdom. The roses and shells were symbols or badges for Pilgrims to the East. The frieze is supported on two female Caryatids with abundant fruit headress and strapwork format below. The overmantel is composed of three typical Jacobean Panels with carved central Paterae, seperated by four female caryatids and lion masks, surmounted by the top fanned panels. These features bear a great resemblance to the chimneypiece and panelling in the Great Hall at Castle Ashby, see images and more details below.

CONNECTIONS : The Chimneypiece and panelling in the Great Hall in Castle Ashby, Marquis of Northampton, have similar details and features and could have been the inspiration for 9922 made in the 19th century and later, integrating earlier 17th century elements. That one was formerly in the Canonbury Tower, Islington on the Northampton's estate..which formerly belonged to the Spencer family of Diana renown, also a hunting lodge for Henry XVIII. The Tower was from the 1950's until recently the Tower Theater..now rebuilding on the recently revealed remains of Shakespeares original Curtain Theater round the corner from Westland's.

Built in 1509 as a country retreat for the Prior of St Bartholemew, Canonbury was acquired in 1590 by Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London 1594-1595.His daughter eloped with a scion of the Compton family, latterley the Earls of Northampton who inherited the Tower when Spenser died. Sir John made many improvements, the fine panelling of the Spencer and Compton Oak Rooms are his work.

10909 : AN ORIGINAL ROYAL MINT PORTCULLIS WROUGHT IRON WINDOW GRILL. The original Royal mint...dating from the 14th century..which was housed within the walls of the Tower of London was moved in 1810 across the square at Tower Hill to the later location built by the architect Sir Robert Smirke, 1781-1867...on the site of a Cistercian Monastery. This and other grills were removed during alterations to the Mint in the 1960's..several were installed at ground level in the Old Bailey Courts of Justice rebuilt section...also in the 1960's..

Another circular one is our stock no 10910. Superb examples of the traditional Smithy's expertise these were probably made by Matthew Boulton who also made the very early thunderous steam presses for minting the coins. See images below showing an interior view of the Mint foundry

THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL MINT extends over a thousand years traced to moneyers of Anglo-Saxon London, then a presence within the walls of the Tower itself thence to the 1810 building at Tower Hill,
