HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

An imposing Italian Renaissance style richly carved stone chimneypiece. Its shelf above a bold egg and dart undershel beneath which is the grandly carved frieze centred by a family crest, flanked by large palmette motifs. The crest bears the motto, “Honi soit qui mal y pense " ('Evil be to him who evil thinks). The jambs with classically styled panels of ribboned stemma nobiliare and eagles rest over pairs of mythical winged creatures on claw fee, very much in the Florentine manner. Italian, early 20th century.
