Antique Irish Georgian White and Diaspora Marble Fireplace Mantel

A PERIOD 18th CENTURY GEORGE III IRISH NEO CLASSICAL FIREPLACE in the manner of Sir Henry Cheere, in white Statuary marble inlaid with Sicilian Jasper panels on the frieze and jambs. The carved detail on the breakfronted shelf of bead and reel, over the undershelf dentil spanning the frieze inlaid with prettily figured polychrome Jasper / Diaspora. The frieze is centred by a large central tablet carved in high relief with ploughboy harnessing a second shire horse, as the first looks on watched by his faithful hound. The plaque is flanked by two endblocks showing a sphinx, supported on tapering plinths carved with ribboned interwoven bellflowers. Circa 1770.

NOTE : The central tablet is very similar to one depicted in the book " English Chimneypieces " published in 1927 by Guy Cadogan Rotheray....see fifth image.
