AN EXCEPTIONAL ESTATE FOUNTAIN PROFUSELY CARVED IN WHITE MARBLE IN THE ROMAN MANNER OF PIRANESI. Inspired by and greatly resembling the Newdigate Candelabrum in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford which was rebuilt and augmented from diverse ancient Roman elements excavated from the site of Hadrian's Villa in the Tivoli, near Rome by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Gavin Hamilton. The latter who became Lord Hamilton was a resident Scottish portraitist, archaeologist and buying agent for the growing number of north European titled folk and gentry on the Grand Tour. The Ashmolean candelabrum was purchased from Piranesi in 1775 by Sir Roger Newdigate and given to the University of Oxford and later transferred from the Radcliffe Library to the Ashmolean. From the same source.. also in the late 18th century, Piranesi & Hamilton also unearthed, rebuilt and sold what later came to be known as The Warwick Vase to Sir William Hamilton, the British Consul to Naples, husband of Lady Emma, paramour of Horatio Nelson, active in the Naples region at the time. This item is early 20th century.
