    A 20th century cast iron fireback, a version of the 'Armada' fireback commemorating the defeat of the Spanish Armada, in 1588. The original Armada fireback design, as seen at Squerrys Court, Westerham, Kent and on which this one is based, has been the subject of both redesign and alteration over the years. Examples are shown in the images attached below.

    An early 20th century cast iron fireback, made by the Carron Foundry of Falkirk, Scotland, cast with a knight on horseback and inscribed "L D Fairfax Covnqvonror ". Fairfax was a commander in the New Model Army. An illustration of this fireback can be seen on page 204 of Carron's 'Architects Catalogue' circa 1910, please see the 4th image below.
    English, early 20th century.

    Notes: The New Model Army of England formed in 1645 won the English Civil War for Parliament and itself came to exercise important political power. It was disbanded in 1660 after the Restoration.

    A cast iron antique fireback, bearing the initials C.H. and the date 1665. It is decorated in low relief with a somewhat dubious Neo Classical scene, the top is adorned with scaly sea serpents, centred with a small clam shell.

    Provenance: Hinwick House, Bedfordshire.

    English, 17th century.

    Note there is an old strapped repaired crack to the bottom.

    A very large French antique cast iron fireback, depicting Jupiter and his attendants set within an oval frame, on a cross hatched ground. The oval itself is set within a scrolled cartouche and twin masks of Jupiter can be seen set on either side. Jupiter was God of Sky and Thunder as was also King of the Gods in Roman mythology. His name in Greek mythololgy was Zeus.

    A small cast iron antique Coat of Arms of Bournemouth Borough Council whose large coastal resort lies on the south coast of Hampshire in England. The Arms were granted on 24th March 1891 and quarterly depict a Cross Flory between a Lion rampant holding a Rose between the paws in the first and fourth quar­ters, six Martlets in the second and four quarters and Salmon naiant in the third. The crest with a knights helmet beneath a wreath upon a mount depicting a tree and four emblematic roses.
    The Motto 'Pulchritudeo et Salubritas' at the base translates as 'Beauty & Health' or 'Handsome is as Handsome does'.
    English late 19th century.

    A French cast iron fireback depicting a salamander the heraldic symbol of the French King François I (1515-1547). The salamander is shown surrounded by flames and as it was believed that they had mystical powers and could not be consumed by fire here it was meant to symbolise the strength and invulnerabilty of royalty.
