A cast iron Baroque armorial fire-back of ogee-arched form, centred by a scroll-edged cartouche enclosing a pair of accolly armorial ovals, one cast with a crowned lion rampant, the other with a salamander surrounded by flames, all between a pair of greyhound supporters and edged with bellflower-cast pilasters.
French mid 18th century.
NOTES :The heraldic design depicting the union of the families of Aviau de Piolant of Tour, Comtes de la Bouere with those for Sallonier de Chaligny of Nivernais (whose shield is a golden salamander bedded in red hot fire on a blue shield) or Jouvet of Auvergne (whose shield is a flaming gold salamander on a blue shield).
