A very large finely carved fireplace in Nembro Rosato marble in the Italian Baroque manner, with acanthus leaf scrolling to a central decorative clam shell, the bolection shaped opening with a small domed arch and the scrolling acanthus decoration echoed at the base of each jamb.
Early 20th century.

A LARGE CARVED PINE FIREPLACE IN THE ENGLISH BAROQUE MANNER. The breakfronted shelf over dentilled, castellated undershelf detail, above an inset frieze panel centred by a high-relief, carved clamshell over scrolled cartouche. The wood surround is carved with descending bellflower decoration around the opening with the black veined and figured original pale Sienna marble ingrounds. Also shown is a dark marble hearth and fender. English, circa 1930, with known London Provenance.

THE UCELLI CAMINETTO: A RARE AND VERY GRAND ITALIAN PERIOD BAROQUE CAMINETTO IN black Tunisian Nero Antico marble with polychrome pietra dura (hardstone) inlaid designs of birds and floral foliage, the central panel featuring an acanthus central cartouche, floral scrolls and ucelli (birds) either side inlaid in various coloured pietra dura inlays.
Italian, circa 1660.

The Antique Baroque design period evolved in the 1600s preceded by the Mannerist design movement and followed by the Rococo style. Grand and impressive, originating in Italy Antique Italian Baroque was followed by French, German, Bohemian, Polish , Spanish , Ukrainian, Flemish and English where leading architects were Wren..St Pauls Cathedral Vanbrugh, Catle Howard & Hawksmoor, St Lukes Spitalfields. City and Country Baroque fireplaces and architecture, which are themselves edifices in miniature, proliferated. This bold and heroic style, monumental and moving, even regarded as protective and reassuring, often affecting deeply the emotions, and noted for its manifest qualities of endurance.
