9944. QUEEN OF SPARTA AND ZEUS : A richly carved statuary marble Neo Classical Chimneypiece in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi 1720-1778. The stepped and layered shelf itself carved with a variety of detail above a crisply carved frieze of ribbon tied Bellflower Swags and Medallions flanking a high relief carved central tablet of Leda , Queen of Sparta reclining, lover of the Greek God Zeus shown here in the form of a swan ….Large Palmette endblocks and the whole frieze underlined with Ropetwist and Pearl motif , all supported on panelled jambs with pendant Bell-flowers, the aperture framed by a Waterleaf and Bead motif.
