" OYSTER ONYX " FIREPLACE : AN ENGLISH GEORGIAN PERIOD FIREPLACE CARVED IN STATUARY MARBLE WITH ONYX INLAY. Somewhat in the manner of a specimen marble architectural chimneypiece beneath the plain moulded shelf are continuous castellated / stop flutes. The bold egg and dart carved border encloses the delightful inner border, which is inlaid with alternate circle and lozenge shapes inlaid with Oyster- like-Honey Onyx panels. The final border is of carved rope-twist decoration around the three sided opening. Known provenance. English, late 18th century.
