The Jacobean era from the Latin Jacobus for James in English, was strictly speaking from around 1600 to 1625 the reign of James the 1st of England, the 6th of Scotland...during this prominent and important design period the previous golden Elizabethan Tudor, Gothic and Renaissance eras styles and motifs were assimilated and expanded into a distinct recognisable identity while retaining the link with Renaissance architecture here and in Europe. Also the emphasis on chimneypieces as stand alone or combined with panelling, stucco etc , decorative, prestigious and important interior main features increased as their presence proliferated in this expansionist time.
It was a blend of those previous styles of Gothic and Renaissance and was followed by the Carolean Baroque style of Charles II and his French wife Henrietta....and later Queen Anne.
The Art Deco period in chimneypieces and design
During the period between 1920 and 1939, thanks to the emergence of the popular international design movement which later came to be known as Art Deco, interior decoration and furniture were characterised by opulence, geometric shapes and the use of innovative and modern materials. The rich style was in stark contrast to the austerity of the years immediately following World War 1, and in the first golden age of industrial consumerism Art Deco featured in the design of automobiles, notably Bugatti , aircraft, ocean liners, and buildings, together with consumer items such as telephones in a cohesive and consistent way.
