Westland London has acquired a rare 19th century Statuary Marble and gilded ormolu chimneypiece in the French Regency style with a large, exquisitely carved 18th century panel after Clodion (1738 – 1814).
The fireplace was made to accommodate the extraordinary 18th century panel which was probably acquired during a Grand Tour. It depicts 'Le Triomphe d'Amphitrite' who can be seen in the centre riding a dolphin attended by putti, tritons (mermen) and nereids (mermaids). Finely applied gilded ormolu, set beneath the cornice shelf and on the jambs and sides, frames the central panel and there are intricately detailed gilded ormolu rams heads and tumbling festoons adorning each jamb above which are large gilded ormolu acanthus leaves.
Originally in the drawing room of Brook House, in Park Lane, Mayfair, London
Brook House was built in the French Regency style from 1867-1869 by the architect Thomas Henry Wyatt for Sir Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, the 1st Lord Tweedmouth. The interiors were designed by the renowned 19th century decorators Wright & Mansfield who were strongly influenced by French design. Click here to read more
