A tall and boldly carved, columned walnut trumeau fireplace surround in Renaissance style. The upper frieze, with a central cartouche flanked by floral scrolls, is set above the main frieze upon which is carved, in high relief, a fire breathing salamander, the heraldic beast of Francois I of France and the symbol of survival. The tall, simple panelled trumeau has a large moulded cornice.
