Chimneypieces | Renaissance | Stock No: 9137

An Italian Renaissance style stone fireplace mantgel

Stock No.9137

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

An imposing, richly carved stone chimneypiece. Its carved shelf sits above a boldly carved egg and dart undershelf, beneath which is the grandly carved frieze centred by a family crest, from which radiates large palmette motifs. The crest bears the motto, “Honi soit qui mal y pense " ('Evil be to him who evil thinks). The jambs with classically styled panels of ribboned stemma nobiliare and eagles rest over pairs of mythical winged creatures on claw fee, very much in the Florentine manner.
