A very attractive and finely made Regency style cast iron and brass antique firebasket. The high shaped backplate, decorated with swags, fronds and goats head masks, is behind a two barred grate mounted with a pair of small swagged brass urn finials and beaded shoulders above the curved foliate cut apron. The grate rests on a pair of ornate tapering standards topped by small four legged pedestals, each mounted with goats head masks and supporting lidded urns, above finely defined paterae. The original Adam designs for this grate are in the Soane Museum in London as mentioned in The English Fireplace by L. A. Shuffrey.
English, late 19th century.
