Most charming of all are the two Irish Water Spaniels peering out from the large "C" scrolled jambs. English, circa 1760.

This chimneypiece was likely to have been made for a great London House possibly for a ladies room or drawing room.

Antique Fireplace Mantels and Chimneypieces in the Rococo Style of the 18th and 19th centuries.  This delicate and playful style, regarded by some at the time as risqué, was established in the 1730’s in France and quickly became widespread throughout Europe.  Rococo fireplaces, mantels and chimneypieces in marble, stone and wood ( frequently gilded in the 18th century  ), were again prolific in the Rococo Revival period of the early to mid 19th century mostly in Italy and France but many fine and grand examples were exported in great numbers to England, Ireland and Scotland. During the reign of Louis XV and the preceding Regence period a more feminine frivolity and intimacy held sway in the arts as a reaction to the monumental formality of the Baroque period.  In England and Germany the Rococo style came under the influence of the Oriental. This was evident in the chimneypiece mantels of Thomas Chippendale. At its best the Rococo style was meant to lighten the mood, to be enjoyed and to encourage gaiety and delight.

Our collection of Antique Rococo fireplaces, chimneypiece and mantels, contains an impressive range in marble, stone and wood. They will enhance any home whether you live in a period house or if you simply want to bring an element of period features to a more modern room design.
