An elegant & well proportioned marble chimneypiece in the Greek Revival manner with well executed micromosaic decoration depicting athletes, maidens, birds & foliage, from a design by John Flaxman (Royal Academy,a Neoclassical sculptor who also designed for Josiah Wedgewood.
1755-1826) see lower image from book on chimneypieces by Shuffrey. Glass Mosaics date from the 3rd century BC and occur in religious and Grand Tour contexts from then till the high point in the 19th century.
