    A fine pair of large 19th century Imari porcelain vases and covers, with a generous baluster form and lightly fluted bodies. The covers are topped with a bowing foo dog, and the body of the vases are beautifully hand painted in red, blue and gold with phoenixes and fans among a floral display.

    A pair of late 19th century patinated bronze garniture urns cast as models of the Warwick vases. The pedestal bodies with lion pelt and mask-head decoration in high relief and elaborately entwined handles, each raised on a waisted circular fluted socle base, supported on stepped Belgian black marble square plinths, raised on paw feet.

    English, c.1880.

    Notes: The Warwick Vase was excavated from Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli in 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, and dates to the second century AD. Hamilton sold the vase to his nephew, the 2nd Earl of Warwick, who built a specially commissioned conservatory in the grounds of Warwick Castle to house it.

    A pair of fine Arita ware jars and covers, finely hand-painted with organic floral decoration.
    Japanese, c.1880.

    Notes: It is said that a Korean ceramist travelled to Japan and discovered a seam of porcelain stone in the province of Arita the early 17th century. Following this discovery, the manufacture of ceramics proliferated in Arita, and much was exported by the Dutch East India company to Europe, where was revered for its quality.

    A rare 19th century Coalbrookdale umbrella or stick stand in the form of a chihuahua - or perhaps small terrier - standing on its hind legs with a whip in its mouth. The drip pan to catch the rain from a folded umbrella is modelled as a lily pad. The most lovely feature is the original patinated bronze finish, a rare survival. The stand is impressed with a diamond registration mark and stamped 85297.

    A magnificent 19th century Oxblood or "Sang de Boeuf" jardiniere on stand, with a lobed planter supported by a base mounted with three griffin monopodia with paw feet.

    Attributed to Pierre Clément Massier. French, c.1880.

    Notes: Clément Massier was born into a family of ceramicists and took an interest in the business from an early age. His factory-gallery complex in Golfe Juan became a destination for the elite who summered in Monaco, Nice, and Cannes. He was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 and subsequently became an of official supplier to the British crown.

    Sang de boeuf glaze first appeared in Chinese porcelain at the beginning of the 18th century. In Europe, many companies tried to replicate the glaze, and it particularly took off in France.

    A pair of 18th century Dutch Delft Faience blue and white vases of octagonal baluster form the covers with scrolling foliate finials. They are very finely painted in cobalt blue. The front panels decorated with peonies and willow trees within scrollwork cartouches the back panels with leaf sprigs on a white background. There are makers mark and initials to the base of each vase. Dutch, circa 1764-70.

    A very large, hand painted maiolica urn in the form of a classical wine krater. The exquisite painted decoration includes two central cartouches, one depicting the Judgement of Paris, the other Venus and Cupid with attendants. This is set against a blue ground decorated with foliate scrolls, masks and shells. The handles are fashioned into winged, leopard like beasts.

    It would make a fantastic centrepiece on a table and is designed to be seen in the round.

    Italian, late 19th, early 20th century. Unmarked.

    A small, early 20th century figurine composed of pressed steel parts, of a Knight of St John in full armour with a paper label to the base for C Galdies Valletta. Based on the full sized suits of armour in the Grand Master's Palace in the centre of the old walled city of Valletta. Malta, early 20th century.

    Notes: The Knights of St John were of the order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem and were an early Catholic military order. They were based in Jerusalem until 1291, on the island of Rhodes from 1310 until 1522, in Malta from 1530 until 1798 and at Saint Petersburg from 1799 until 1801.

    Notes: The gourd form is modelled on an Asian squash called the calabash, which had many uses and is symbolic of protection and good fortune.

    A pair of 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty baluster vases of fine quality. Each vase is hand painted with sinuous designs of delightful stylised flowers and leaves wrapping around their bodies and the lids are surmounted by upright Foo Dogs resting their paws on small globes. Foo Dog masks with rings in their mouths can also be seen in pairs on the shoulders. Foo Dogs, or Chinese Guardian Lions, were believed to be protective forces, often found guarding the entrances to Temples and Imperial Palaces.

    A very decorative, deep sea blue and shore sea green, Royal Doulton of Lambeth salt glaze stoneware jardiniere stand with rosettes and scrolled foliate and acanthus detail, in the Art Nouveau manner. The company registration mark, consisting of an impressed medallion surrounded by the words Royal Doulton England and surmounted by a crown and lion together with the number 294, is clearly visible on the base. Please refer to the last image below. This stand would normally support a jardiniere of the same design and colour and were a very popular parlour item in Edwardian times.

    A large and rare glazed turquoise ceramic urn and stand in the Egyptian manner designed by Christopher Dresser and made by the Linthorpe Art Pottery in Middlesborough.

    The urn is stamped with the maker's name on the base, along with the number 2253, and can also be seen on the inside of the base of the stand along with the number 2058. Both are shown in the tenth image below. Please note one of the handles has been restored and there is a restored chip to the rim. English, c.1880.

    Notes: Linthorpe Art Pottery ran for just ten years from 1879 to 1889. It was started by John Harrison at the suggestion of Christopher Dresser, the prominent designer. Dresser supplied many designs for the pottery. Henry Tooth ran the pottery until 1882, when he left to set up Bretby Art Pottery with William Ault he was succeeded at Linthorpe by Richard Patey.

    A large and fine pair of porcelain armorial lidded vases with meticulously hand painted molded and enamelled family crests and foliate decoration made by Edmé Samson (b Paris, 1810; d Paris, 1891), and were probably intended to be used as ginger jars. French, circa.1870.

    Notes: Edmé Samson was the founder of the ceramics firm Samson, Edmé et Cie established in Paris in the 1840's. His Chinese style makers mark can been seen at the base.

    A small cast iron antique Coat of Arms of Bournemouth Borough Council whose large coastal resort lies on the south coast of Hampshire in England. The Arms were granted on 24th March 1891 and quarterly depict a Cross Flory between a Lion rampant holding a Rose between the paws in the first and fourth quar­ters, six Martlets in the second and four quarters and Salmon naiant in the third. The crest with a knights helmet beneath a wreath upon a mount depicting a tree and four emblematic roses.
    The Motto 'Pulchritudeo et Salubritas' at the base translates as 'Beauty & Health' or 'Handsome is as Handsome does'.
