AN IMPRESSIVE LARGE CARVED MARBLE OVERMANTEL IN THE PALLADIAN MANNER. Carved in white marble with pink figuring and veining, the arched " broken pediment " with scrolled brackets supported on the mirror frame which is carved with running egg and dart, supported on either side with scrolled consoles. English, circa 1900.
PROVENANCE : The Baltic Exchange, 30 St Mary Axe in the City of London. The historic building was designed by Smith and Wimble, and completed by George Trollope & Sons in 1903: it was subsequently listed as a Grade II* listed building....On 10 April 1992 at 9:20 pm, the façade of the Exchange's offices was partially demolished, and the rest of the building was extensively damaged in a Provisional IRA.. demolition specialists.. bomb attack, killing 3 people and injuring 92.
The building was eventually demolished and replaced by 'The Gherkin' occupied by Swiss Re and othe companies.
