A pair of Italian walnut Sgabelli, hall chairs, each with shell and C-scroll carved top rail above an armorial cartouche flanked with carved mythical Chimera above a solid shaped seat supported on similarly carved and pieced solid front supports. Centre on back - Vatican lion - below Medici pills.
Italian 19th century.
Provenance / attribution : On a note pinned to the back: ‘This pair of chairs was carved by Pompinoli - a carver to the Vatican. Mary Anne Shelley, author of Frankenstein, purchased these circa 1853’.
